~ Byines JOE BUGELLI Bugelli wants zebras off of town streets West Ward Councillor Joe Bugelli has called for the town to do a complete review of traffic problems in Whitby, in particular those to do with the use of un- controlled crosswalks. He said that the crosswalks,_ which he calîs zebras crossovers, are dangerous and could leave the town liable for damages if a pedestrian is injured or killed as a result of using them. Zebra crossovers are crosswalks marked out by Unes but not located at inter- sections equipped with traf- fic lights. Bugelli said that the crosswalks are dangerous because unlike controlled crosswalks, they do not give the pedestrian the right-of- way and have no signs for the motorist to watch for pedestrians. one such crosswalk, located near Manning Road, was the sight of an accident in March in which à child was hit by a car while retur- ning from school. Works Director Dick Kuwakara said that such signs would cost about $3,5W0 each. Bugelli, who called the zebra crossings t'one of the most dangerous things a municipality, can do," said he checked and found out that the town would be hiable in an accident. "People think that they have the right-of-way and t.hey don't," he said. "If a person gets hit, it is the fault - of the pedestrian, not the motorist. " He said that other problems exist with inadequate signs, conflicting signs and poor and dangerous road conditions in many parts of Whitby.
