"Until we establish the regional headquarters in better accommodation, there's always a danger of it going. to Oshawa," Emm said, "Geographically, there's no difference bet- ween Whitby and Oshawa. 'IWhitby is entitled to its share too. " Emm also indicated that he does flot want Whitby's position in Durham Region to deteriorate. 'II don't want it to deteriorate," he said. "lWe have a strong potential in the region. " Back on the local scene, Emm said tfat he wants the character of the older sec- tions of town to be preser- ved. "lWe will also be having a very close look at the older sections of town and the established street scapes that have been with us since the early county days," he said adding that he wanted them "«incorporated into any plans re any street and sidewalk reconstruction so as to preserve the character of those streets." Emm, who is chairman of town council's operations committee, said that the Brooklin development question must also be solved at the regional level. III will be urging regional council to understand the Town of Whitby's agreement with the developers of the Brooklin village and I will be asking regional council to support, as soçn as possible, a regional decision to im- plement that agreement." The eye cat- ching plates are now on sale at local fine stores. The plate features that fine line drawing of Whitby Harbour in 1865 by Cam- bridge, Ontario, artist Roy Austin. It is one of the original drawings that were produced, as prcliminary works for the painting in oils, that is now ,w,-red by the Town of Whitbv .and on exhibition at the ni~~iîcipal building. The drawing was first used as the main illustration for the 20 page Whitby Fre Press, history supplement, of June 11, 1980. We are, therefore, delighted to sec, thc Historical Society make good, new use, of this fine drawing. The plates were produced by custom ceramics of Stouffvillc, Ontario and thcy should prove to be good Christmas gifts for all those history oriented citizens of Whitby and collectors of decorative plates everywhere. Betty Wcldon is respon- sible for making these commemorative plates available for the people of Whitby and once again, the Whitby Historical Society is to be congratulated on a job well donc.
