&PA,&GE 14, WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 24,1980, NEW CAR SIJPPLEMENT Running Iow on gas «M by Richard ChqrIes Do you know hiow much gasoline we use each year? About 10 billion galions - that's over 400 gallons for each man, woman and child- in Canada - and we could probably pour one or two billion gallons down thre drain for ail the good they do us. Can you picture ail the oil wells, refineries, pipelines, tankers, tank trucks and filling stations il takes to deliver this ocean of gasoline to us, and the energy used in doing il? But, despite the puice, which is steadily creeping up toward the world level of 5 1.50 a gallon, we use 'and waste more gasoline each year, and no one can be sure how soon tte wels wilrun dry. Ideally, we should ail be driving cars that give at least 50 miles to thre gallon. But, as these wHi not serve etreryone's needs, we can at least see that our cars use as little fuel as possible by keeping them in top mechanical shape. The Champion Spaik Plug Company tarrie d out some tests which showed that almost lialf of the cars in tbe Toronto and Montreal areas were badly maintained and wasted fuel, polluted the air excessively or otherwise perforrned badly. They said that thre fuel efficiency of cars could be improved by an average of 9 per cent. They reduced one car's fuel consumnption by 5 5 per cent. The Office of Energy Conservation, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, estimates that good car main- tenance increases fuel economy by I 5'per cent over a poorly maintained car. If salt is used on the w inter roads wlhcre you drive, have your car rustproofed, but insist on a guarantee; or have the underside of your car sprayed with used motor oul before or during winter. Also, if possible, wash the underside of your car at a do-it-yourself car wash, and pay special attention to the places where sait and dirt collect. Car Touch-Up Tips For Tip-Top Resuits Does your car have a dent here and a spot of rust there? You don't have to resign yourself to a big repair bill - or just living with- the damage. A little spray paint can help even the mechanic- ally disinclined get the old jalopy looking spruce-as- new again. Matchin g the car color will be no problem in most cases. One manufacturer, Krylon, bas 70 matching car colors of easy-to-use spray paint from which to choose, including those for rnany trucks and- foreign cars.. It's a snap 10 do a professional- looking job by following a few simple repair sîeps. lt's basically a malter oh illing and repainting. Minor dents: 1. Sand the damaged area, rigbt down to tbe metal. Feather (lightly sand) the edge of the aiea for a smootb transition between the metal and the paint around it. 2. FuIltbe dent with plas- tic auto body riller. 3. After filler dries, sand il smooth and level witb $400 gril wet-or-dry sand- paper. (For shaîlow scratch- es, omit the plastic filler step.) 4. After sanding, dlean tbe aiea witb napîba or auto rubbing compound. 5. Mask off tbe sur- roundîng aiea with masking tape and paper. Or, for a small aiea, cul a hole in a piece of cardboard, hold i near the surface and spray tbrough the bote. 6. Apply metal primer. For best results, use a rust- preventive primer of the same brand and lighter in color than the paint you will apply. 7. Apply spray paint, ai- ter -primer dries. I-bld the spray can 10 to0 12 inches from the surface and spray a few light coats on just to the point of glossy wetness, letting each coat dry before applying the next. Clean the aiea and press adhesive-backed alu- minum tape over the aiea to serve as a base for plastic auto body iller. 4.
