Fitry years would pass, however, before improved roads, stage lines and a regular postal service would combine ta provide tolerable travel conditions, in the Whitby area. These improvements in communications and the Iroad systemns of Upper Canada also brought changes in many place names, that were given ta Ithem in earlier tirnes. Township Unes and con- cession roads were surveyed by Governor Simcoe's engineers in the years of fir- st settlement and a certain arnount of grading and sur- facing work was completed at that time. AlJ this did not guarantee, however, that there were many miles of good roads fit for travel in this part of the country. Simcoe surveyors often blazed road-side trees, ta, mark the way for set- tler/famer's statute labor in maintaining concession roads. Unfortunately, ab- sentee owners and the Chur- ch of England, did little labor on the roads fronting on their lands. As a result, there were great unsurfaced wagons, soon made quaqmires of mud from the neglected areas. Roads -in the outlying areas were poor and settiers there were isolated fromn the mnain centres of pper Canada, that were in fact, flot far away. Roads into those main centres were often relatively good-going into York (Toronto), Oshawa. Up nor- th, Ilowever, on the back concessions, it was almost wilderness travel where put- ty-llke, rutted dlay, road surfaces defied the best ef- forts of both man and beast, to get anywhere in the wet, green days of summer. As a resuit travel and the transport of goods became a winter activity with sleighs and s0 it was for many years. Ambulance During the week that en- ded on midnight last Thur- sday the Whitby Ambulance Service responded ta 91 calîs for service. 0f these, 29 were calls of a routine nature, 36 were standby cails for other am- bulance services in Oshawa and Ajax.
