"In my campaign two years ago, 1 supported a transit systemn for Whitby," he said. "During my first term of office, council im- plemented a bus system for a three year trial period. "This system is having growing pains, but it is only in its first six months of operation." Evans, a lawyer, said that if re-elected he will strive to make the systern effective. "During the next term on council, if re-elected, I will New church A proposai to build a new Baptist church on Taunton Road-will likely be approved by Whitby Town Council despite an objection from the town's fire department. The department could not support the proposai of Faith Baptist Church because, according to a report from the planning director, "the size of the structure and the lack of municipal 'water supply." The fire departments con- cerns are the result of a fire that occured last year in a nearby ceramies factory. Firefighters could not adequately fight the blaze because they had to return south to the town to ref ili tankers. The congregation of the church moved out sold their old facility on Brock Street North last year. It is now the location of the recently opened Stardust Diiuiier - Theatre. " Evans who is married with two children, also said that ie has nothing but praise for the work being done by the DIAB. "During the past two years I have- been working with the board of management of the Down- town Improvement Area Board to encourage revitalization of the core area. "The board has been responsible for a highly suc- cessful pedestrian rnall and is currently paying to have the bus system operate, without fee, on Saturdays. "Many individuals have taken the incentive to facelift the downtown, they deserve full credit for their efforts and I will be assisting in any way possible on coun- cil."
