Regional council set up a special committee com- posed of Beath, the mem- bers of the management committee and the chair- men of the four standing committees to find a person for the job. The special committee, chaired by Whitby Mayor Jim Gartshore in his position as chairman of the management committee, received 53 applications for the position which was reduced -to a short list of about eight. Three of short list were in- terviewed twice before Evans was offered the job. Gartshore said that Evans' years of experience in running the ad- ministration of the Soo was a big factor in his selection. During his tenure in that northern city, Evans was responsible for a staff of 800 and an annual budget of $40 million. Gartshore described him as a "serious and intellignet man." "He just appeared, out of the people we interviewed to be the best man for the job," Gartshore said. The Rev. Gerald A.
