Report from Q ueen 's Park ~uu By GEORGE ASHE. INPP (PC-DURHAM WEST) Fitness is in Physical fitness may not be the panacea for today's social and economiic problems,, but as. a step towards more positive lifestyles, it is becoming an increasingly desired goal among the people of Ontario. Since its inception in 1975, the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Rtecreation lias been seeking out ways to encourage Ontarians to take better care of themnselves. Fit- ness Ontario, an arm of the Ministry of Culture and Recreation, is a sniall group of professionals organlzed in 1976 to establish the province&s role in assisting oui aduit population to becorne more physically active and physically fit. The public programs set up the Fitness Ontario have cen- tered on fitness testing, leadership training, adult fitness awards programming, employee fitness and support for communuties in their fitness initiatives. Fitness Ontario mainly works through municipal recreation departments, YM/YMCAs, community groupe and Ontario familles. A major initiative cf the Fitness group has been the operation of FItFve and Family' FitTogether awards programs. These were set up two years ago for the purpose of providing encouragement to Individuals and familles to par- ticipate in re$ular physical activity ... particularly those who are not normally ver)' active. The awards program iîs ad- ministered by a private meerchandising firm, which is in the process 0f establishing local FitFive registration centres in urban and rural areas throughout Ontario. Recently, the Ministry of Culture and Recreation, in conjun- ction with the Ontario Heart Foundation, submitted a questionnaire to 1000 randomnly selected companies in Ontario. This questionnaire produced a number of interesting results. for instance, when asked if they would be interested in ad- ditional information on the types of employee programming available, most companies ranked employee fitness the very highest. Other life-style topics which sparked interest in the private secotr tbrough this questionnaire were stress reduc- tion, smoking cessation, coronary heart disease prevention, alcohol and drug abuse, retirement planning, nutrition and weight control, and employee recreation. More than 13 per cent of ail companies in Ontario presently offer f itness programs to their employees. In response to this corporate demand for physical and lifestyle programs, Fit- Whitby ambulance During the week that en- ded at midnight last Thur- sday, the Whitby Ambulance Service responded to 79 caîls for service. 0f these, 36 were of routine nature and 33 were standby cails for other am- bulance services in Oshawa and Ajax. Whether it is a fitness program at work or a local recreation centre I would encourage ail t.he people of Durham West to become involved in some form of physical recreation. Per- sonally, I find playing tennis every week a stimulatlng, yet reiaxing, way to keep fit. Remember though that recreation must be comblned wlth common sense, Don't overdo it at first, and if you should ex- perience any unusual reaction to exercise you should see your doctor. rn 49.00 Stained & Laquorsd FumnIturo.
