PAGE 10, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER Il9ý, 1980, WHITBY FREE PRESS IThe Chureli Speaks BY THE REV. WILLIAM W. WYRICK Local Evangellat "Trai up a child i the way he should go; and when he is old, he will n.rt depart from it." (Proverbe 22:6) Most parents want hi be the onça thi tell their chlldren the facts of lite, but embarrassment and personat hangups of- ten get in1 the way. When our children want answers, they go hi the street where the answers are usually wrong. Therefore, many children grow up wlth a warped attitude concernlng sex. How can this be avoided? By putting sex education where it belongs i the home!l But the question qulckly arises: "If sex education belongs i the home (and moêt of us agree that it does) what can we do to keep it there?" Flrst, there are two schools of thought that must be consldered: (1) Young people already know ail there is hi, know about sex. (2) Too much sexual knowtedge is bar- mfui Do young people already know ail there is to know about sex? No! Many young people do know qulte a lot about sex, but everythlng? No way! Research indicates shocki'ng ignorance among adolescent girls. In a 1976, John Hopkins University study of adolescent, girls, only 41 per cent knew when i the menstrual cycle that the risk of conception was the greatest. In a study of 300 pregnant teenagers (ail from the same high achool), the girls were asked why they had I Briing sex ed baclk home not practlced birth controt. "Oh, but we dld," was the general response. Their answers revealed t.hat they were misinformed concernlng sexual intercourse and birth con- trot. The one million pregnancies in 1976, the three million new cases of venereal disease (two-thlrds among young people under age 25), the misinformation about normal and abnormal sexual behavior emphaticaily contradlct the myth that young people know everythlng there Is to know about sex. Now let's look at the second school of thought which teaches that too much knowledge about sex is harmful. Practicaily ail opposition to sex education Is based on the assumption that children who know about sex wll put their knowledge into practice. Personally, 1 am of the opinion that it is not the knowledge about sex, but the atmosphere and envlronment i which It is taught that makes classroom sex education unacceptable.. When readin', 'ritin, and 'rlthmetlc are taugiit i the classroom the personal, moral, ethical, -and religlous values and standards are not necessary to impart thia knowledge to the student. On the other hand, when famil lIfe, sex, homosexuaity, sexual behavior, marriage, datig, child birth, and other related subjects are taugt i a classroom atmosphere - personat, moral, ethicat, and religlous standards and values are essential. AUl of us should realize that school teachers are a blessing. They have been expertly trained to effectîvely use various methods of inpartig knowlede to students. They have not been trained to, teach morals and values. This should corne from the home. Sex education i shools would be unnecessary if the parents would follow the admonition of King Solomon, "Train up a child i the way he should go: and when he is old, he wll not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6) I cannot understand why some parents want to "Crop-out" on this most important privilege of sex education in the home. RU1S4SELL TRAVEL LTD. 126 Brock St. S. I believe most parents feel uncomfortabte about discussing subjects per- tainlng to sex. Many parents feel uncomfortable about the other subjects also (e.g. modern math), but we should make a decent effort to help our children. It is not necessary to feel totally comfortabte about sex hi order hi be an effective sex educator for your children. If your child dlscerns that you as a parent are a bit awkward when discusslng love and sex, the chances are good that your child wil respond favorably to your honesty. Parents can do a tremendous service for their children by vlsitig the local llbrary and checkig out many good books that wWl help anwer your children's questions. Sex education is a family affair. It is related to how you feet about yourself and your abillty to conmmicate wlth members of your own family. When King Soloman, the world's wlsest man, spoke the words i Proverbs 22:6, he was not speaklng hi the educational system or the Church - he was speaklng hi the home. Let's- put sex education where it belongs - in the home 1 Cold masks offtereil by Lung Association As winter draws on, Durham Region Lung Association is again offering free Cold Weather Protec- tion Masks to people with severe respiratory problems. For such people, winter's icy blasts add a whole new dimension to the difficulties of daity living with chronic lung disease. When they teave a warm environment and inhale that first lungful of cold air, their bronchial tubes can go into "ispasm", causing a painful struggle for breath and an overwhelming sense of suf- focation. Angela Tibbles, executive' director of the local Christ- mas Seat Organization, stresses that the Cold Weather Mask is a protec- tive device only. It does not supply oxygen or fuif il any other therapeutic function. In common with ail lung association programs, the masks are funded by con-. tributions to the Crhistmas Seal Campaign (now under- way in Durham Region).
