GREENAWAY Free Press Staff The defending champiam Henry Hawks senior football club re-establlshed tem- selves as the top team in the Lake Ontario Secondary School Association football league Saturday defeating the McLaughlin Trojans 35-6* to capture the John Elliott trophey for the second year in a row. After a season of six wins and no defeats the Hawks moved on to defeat the Donevan Bule Devils in quarter final play 35-O and Dunbarton 48-13 in the semi-finals to earn their way into the final match up With the Trojans. "4The whole key to the game had to be our defen- ce," said Hawk coach Pat Puckenll., "lWe have a lot of respect for their quarter back (Jeff Walley),because we knew he could throw the bahl well so we keyed on the defence and they were knocking the ball down." The Hawks moved the football down the field on their first pocession of the garne and in three plays were ahead 7-0 on a Peter Sirko touchdown and Greg Borchuck convert. Sirko, who was later voted the ganie's most valuable player, scored three touch- downs during the course of the gaine while teain mates Paul Luchka and Rob Dob- bins added the other two majors. Borchuck kicked ail five convert attempts through the posts. The second Sirko TD put the Hawks ahead 14-O to end the first haîf of play. While the offence played a strong game and did what they were out there,-to do numerous penalties and a few mistakes could have cost the teain more than it did. "When the offence lost the bail the defence just said 'Don't worry we' h get it back' and they did," said Pucknell. "We just didn't let them capitalize on our mistakes. " Bob Lymer of the Trojans did capitalize on one such mistake during the third quarter. One fourth down and several yards to go the Hawks folled the Trojans and the majority of the spec- tators when they tried to run the hall instead of punt it away. The play didn't click and the bail was fumbled. Lymer quickly recovered the baîl and ran it in to the Hawk end zone for the Trojans only major socre of the game. The fourth quarter saw the Hawks put the game away and then some when their final three touchdowns were scored. "The McLaughlin players were one class team," said Pucknell. "Af ter the gaine both teains were patting each other on the back." "No one expected to walk in and take the game. " After the game was over John Paul Aggett received the league's most vahuahie player of the year award. Aggett was also the recipient of the coaches trophey presented- the day before at a school pep rally. "4A lot more work went in- to this championship than the last one, " sàid Pucknell. 11We had a lot of first year players playing very key positions. "' "It's very difficuit to find kids coming out of junior that can be not only a starter but a star on the senior tean. " Pucknell said that the Trojans were a very similiar team to thein in style and execution of play. "In a way it was like playing ourselves. " 0f the 32 man roster, the present senior squad will los 20 players next year. While Pucknelh admitted ti would be sad to see players like Sirko, Rob Artner, Ray McWhirter and Aggett go however, he said juniors held sorne interesting prospects 'coming u through the ranks. He hopes that the newcomers and the seasoned veterans will hel1p to make the clubs ultimate dream corne true next season.
