Tresise said that con- siderable progress is being made by DOIT, and outlined new projects of the in- dustrial training commit- tees. "Plans -are underway to provide training to upgrade electrical trades personnel in the Durham Region. A number of companies have expressed interest in such a projeet. DOIT's objectives are to analyze what training has been done to date, assess future needs, and determine what is required to handie the an-going technological change in this particular skilled trades field." An ad hoc committee composed of Stewart Wagner of the General Motors Fabricating plant, Reinhard Mantzel of the Canada Employment Centre and J.J. White of Westcane Sugar Ltd. will work with representatives of the in- terested cômpanies in the deXelopment of such a training program. E.A. Barks, president of Cooper Metalcraft, (Pickerizîg), representing ermagazine racks a can ister sets e children's chairs *wine racks the precision metal fabricators in the Durham REgion, has solicited the DOIT committee's assistan- ce in having the precision metal fabricating trade recognized as a "certified" skilled trade. The reason for this request for help is a resuit of many years in an industry which Colonial Rocker Reg. $149.10 Christmas Special $135.002111 oclocks 0 candie holders e pictures, has continually experlenced growth rates without a proper training facility to develop existing or potential employees. "The metal fabricatars believe that a "feeder systemn" of new employees ready to be trained and willing to comence work in their industry, would provide the solution to a chronic need for new per- sonnel, " Barks said. After some discussion at a recent meeting, thée DOIT committee -agreed to sup- port the efforts of the metal fabricating companies through the establishment of a sub-committee which woul deal specifically with the development, lobbying and organizational efforts required. A status report on current training in the Durham Region was made by Frank Norris from the appren- ticeship training board of the Ministry of Colleges and Universities. Total training in the In- dustrail Mechanic, Fitter Welder, General Machinist and Tool and Die programs are now 155, up from 74 one year ago. The 155 trainees do not include 60 mould- makers currently on block release programs. A survey in regard to motor vehicle mechanics in the Durham REgion is being planned which will establlsh training needs in this area. There are currently a large number of apprentice motor mechanics who would prefer to take their training here. Therefore, there could be a strong advantage in developing a local program. The next meeting of the DOIT committee is scheduled for December 18, and will be held at the Durham Regional Headquarters at 10 a.m. Any companies interested in participating are most welcome.
