WHIITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 17, J980. PAGE 9 Shortage in housing cited ...a. Housing proj ect ]Propos ed to counel A proposai has been brought forward that would sec the construction of a 156 bcdWI senior citizcn's apar- tment building in -a vacant lot next to Whitby's Fair- view Lodge Home for the aged. Bilway Investments, a Mississauga dcvelopment firm, will- appear before Whitby Town Council next month to ask that the land, located on the north side of Dundas Street West betwcen the lodge and Palace Street, to be re-zoned. Bob Short, the town's director of planning said last week that while thc plans are still in thc early stages the project "is sort of a new concept. " He indicated that the complex, if approved, will consist of single roomns and apartments suites and that tenants will share a common kitchen. Short was careful to point out that the complex will not be a nursing home. The facility, he added, would be used to case the shortage of appropriate ac- comdoation for senior citizens who arc cligible for admission to either a nur- sing home or one of the region's three homes for the aged. The town council has ap- proved a similiar project located at the corner of Manning Road and Brock Street North, however, con- struction on this project has not begun and no date for the start of the work has been announccd. A third project is alrcady underway on Manning Road. The facility, known as Man- ning News will provide housing for 20 people. A shortage of housing for senior citizens lias caused the apparent rush to start such projeets. This shortage evens extends into area nur- sing homes. The Region of Durham has instituted plans for a $2.4 million renovation of the lodge which should add about 20 more beds when completed. Wendy Wallace Wendy Wallace, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Wallace of Brooklin, recently received her nursing degree from the Durham College of Applied Arts and Technology in Oshawa. She has accepted a position with the Oshawa General Hospital.
