WIIITBY FREIE PRESS, "CHIRISTMAS SUPPLENIENT", WEDNESDAN', IECEMIBER 17, 11)80, PAGE 3 UT CAME UPON THE MIDNIGHT CLEAR It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, Frorn angels bending near the earth To touch their harps of gold "Peace on the earth, good will to men, Frorn heav'ns ail gracious King." The world in solemn stîllness lay To hear the angels sing. Stili thro' the cloyen skies they came, With peaceful wings unfurl'd. And stili their heav'nly music floats O'er ail the weary world. Above its sad and lowly plains The bend on hov'ring wing, And ever o'er its Babel sounds The blessed angels sing. 0 ye, beneath life's crushing load, Whose forms are bending low, Who toil along the climbing way With painf'ul steps and slow, Look now, for glad and golden hours Corne swiftly on the wing, O rest beside the weary road And hear the angels sing. For Io! the days are hast'ning on, By prophets seen of old, When with the ever circling years, Shall corne the time foretold, When the new heav'n and earth shall own The Prince of Peace their King, And the whole world send back the song Which now the angels sing. THE FIRST NOEL The first Noel the angel did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they iay, In fields where they Iay a-keeping their sheep On a cold winter's night that was so deep. Refrain: Noel, Noei, Noei, Noel, Born is the King of israei. They looked up and saw a star, Shining in the east, beyond thern afar, And to the earth it gave great light, And s0 it continued both day and night. And by the iight of that same star Three wisemen came from country far; To seek for a King was their intent, And to foilow the star wherever it went. This star drew nigh to the northwest, Near Bethlehemn h took its rest, And there it did both stop and stay, Right over the place where Jesus lay. Then entered in those wise men three, Feul reverentiy upon their hnee, And offered there in His presence Their gold and myrth and frankincense. Then let us ail one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord, That hath made heaven and earth of nought And with His biood rnankind hath brought. Sîlent night! Hoiy night!
