The last time he visited local theatre was in the 1930's with Buster Crabbe in the starring role. Flash is the original product of a cartoonist named Alex Raymond, a man who stili takes pen in hand and works with Chic Young on the blondie strip. In the new movie the old characters are all there. We have Flash, his girl friend Dale Arden, Ming the Mer- ciless on the planet Mongo, and it'ahl adds up to enter- taining fare with the goods fighting the bads. Flash is played by Sam J. Jones (Bo Derek's husband in 10). He's a blond, muscular, former stuntman. There are ahl sorts of characters dressed in fan- tastic costumes, some of which will probably appear for sale on store shelves within a short time. The story is something else again too. Flash is a quar- terback with the New York Jets, his girl friend is a lonely real estate agent, and they get together with a- crazed scientist named Zarkow who ups and tran- sports the three of them to Mongo in his rocket. Once they arrive at their destination, they get locked in with the bad guys and the fun really starts. Ming is a terrible person who appears to have a patent on evil, and there is Mongo's chief of secret police, another mean one to deal with. Then, we have the Prin- cess Aura, Ming's daughter who gets a crush on Flash. Princess Baron and Vuitan are convinced that team ef- fort in the Flash Gordon manner is the only way they can unseat the mad ruler. Flash himself, that hero of ail boys, heartthrob of al girls, and admired by ahl parents is not a power hungry madman at ail. Good old Flash is concerned about the plight of the world in general, and -if he ever takes that on, he really has his work cut out for him. In this movie, Flash has a real problem because the moon is hurtlQng towards the ear- th. Dethroning Ming is the only way he can save earth. Ail of this, coupled with special music by the rock band Queen, exciting and colorufl costuming, all leads towards the film's climax. It has been already predic- ted that costumer Danilo Donati may win his thrid academy award for his work in this picture. His two previous awards were for Romeo and Juliet and Casanova. The picture itself will cer- tainly not win too much of anything, but the producer Dm0o DeLaurentis is flot worried about citations as long as the cash registers keep ringing at the box of- fice. Now that you are in- terested and want to go see the movie, we'll tell you that it is playing at the Hyland theatre in Oshawa and has been doing very well to date. Three other films in the Oshawa area that have been keeping the fans coming, are Slap Shot with Paul Newman at the Odeon, Goldie Hawn in Private Ben- jamin at the Centre Cinema and Ordinary People with Mary Tyler Moore and Donal Sutherland, also at the Centre Cinemas.
