'LSDAY', )CMR 23, 1980, WIIITBY FREE PRESS Transit system cost taxpayers $600 per daym November The beleagured Whitby Transit Sstem lost money in the month of November according to figures given to Whitby Town Council last week. In his report to council, town treasurer AI Claringbold said that the total cost of running the system was 1,049.95 a day. The gross cost to the town was $600.34 a day with the balance coming from the farebox ($187.12 a *day on average) and from provin- cial government subsidies ($262.49 a day). The revenue raised from the farebox represented 17.8 per cent of the cost of run- ning the service. These figures are down sliguitly from those in Oc- tober when the farebox con- tributed an average of $189.76 a day with a total average cost to the town of $597.70aday. In October, the farebox represented 18.1 per cent of fth e total cost of the opera tion. However, in monetary terms, November's rider- ship was still up from Sep- tember's when the farebox c-ollected an average of $166.64 a day. Lt should also be noted that in September, the system received $233.10 a day in provincial subsidies; with an average daily total cost of $932.40 with a net cost to the town of $532.66. These figures were not en- couraging to members of council, especially East Ward Councillor Joe Drumm who said, "It's ob- vious that we are loosing money on the buses." Council supported Drumm's request that the town staff prepare a full financial report on the system for presentation to the operations committee at their meeting on February 2. "I1 want to see where we are losing it (money) before we make any decisions," Drumm told council. Claringbold also said in his report that "The daily revenue is still lagg 'ing behind our budget target of 25 per cent by $75.37 per day. " Whitby Jaycees' Ken Thoms, co-chairman of the Santa Claus Parade Committee, and Jaycee president Keith Wagar present the award for the best independant float to Stuart Dre w of the 7th Whitby Çlubs. -ht yBbRcado INew home be ing s ouglit for Whitby Transit It seems as though the Whitby Transit Service can't find a home. The buses wilI remain at the present transfer point on Coîbourne Street East at Brock Street for about mon- th until council can find a new place to park them. When, the service was first introduced in the summer, the transfer point was at the Four Corners , however, complaints about traffic congestion and parking problems prompted council to move them to their present location. Now it appears as though merchants on that section of Coibourne Street feel that the buses are blocking their business and have expressed a desire to see the move. Centre Ward Councillor Barry Evans suggested at last week's meeting of coun- cil that the buses be parked in the parking lot behind the downtown fire station. Bestfloat We hope the holidays bringyou Peace and Happiness as we enjoy this most holy of seasons. We offer you ail of our wishes for the Christmas Season and for always.
