" 4 4What wouid I be? " said a maiden fair; and thoughtful the light ini ber*eyes "I'd write stirring words, and bring out the spel that in today's harmony lies, I'd rouse up the heart with my melodies sweet, and nerve men with words trite and strong and gather the tributes of praise and fame that ever to genious belon. I'What would I be? " said a gentle one, as she smiled with a heavenly grace, "1I'd bind up the woundsand dry ail the tears from poverty's thin pallid face; I'd scatter iiy.gold in the path's of the poor None should hunger and none should be sad, I'd throw precious gifts like incense around and make every heart young and glad. As the seraph stood by, he said with a smile, as he kissed the last speaker's bright face "Thou hast chosen the mission which angels love; To perform it may God give thee grace For pleasure in vain, and beauty must die, and genius dies neyer to rise; But charity shines the bright gem of the earth, and glows brighter when set in the skies." Author Unkown Whitby ChÈonicle December 23, 1880. Need a Buffalo Robe? Great Clearance Sale - J.B. Powell & Co. Dominion Warerooms, Whitby Ont. How about your Christmas Liquor supply? Mr. Robinson, Head-Master, $1,400, other salaries range from $25, no doubt part time, $770, $402, $37.50, $18, $150, and s0 on. Fuel costs, $108.57 and cleaning and repairs amounted to $120.08. In 1880 school attendance was, High School, 205, Henry St. Sehool, 271 Dundas St. Sehool, 106, John St. School, 109. There was a population of 3349, an increase of 94. No doubt the graduates knew their three "R's". I wonder if any of them were refused admission to university because they could not speli or do math? 1 could not for lack of ime find any tax rates; no doubt in line with siaries of that time. Talking of spelling in these times I wonder what gremlin grabs my colurnn before it goest to print? I arn a good spelier and of course make the odd mistakes as I did when spelling Macbeans a few weeks ago; I wrote Mleans and realized a second later but forgot to correct it. I just thank God none of my Mistress' from B.S.S. live in or near Whitby. Anyone for a horse? Livery? We have recently published a new addition of Dr. Culver- wells Celebrated Essay on the radical and permanent cure without medicine of nervous debility, mental and physical incapacity, impedirnents of marriage etc. resulting from ex- cessivess. Priced in a sealed envelope, only 6t or two postage stamps. The celebrated author, in his admirable essay clearly demonstrates from thirty years successful practise, that alarming consequences maybe radically cured without the dangerous use of internal medicines of the use of the knife; pointing out a mode of cure at once simple, certain and effec- tuai, by means of which every sufferer, no matter what his condition, may cure himself cheaply, privately and radically. This lecture should be in the hands of every youth and every man in the land--The Culverwell Medical Co. New York. This ad from 1880 no doubt would keep many a youth and married man on the straight and narrow path wondering what dreadful fate lay ahead. More effectuai maybe than classes on sex education. But this is 1980 not 188. Nowadays everything is speeded -tlrùp, we have instant communication but in the long run the basics are the same. Have a happy but thoughtful time this Xmas and blessings to ail the children, the older ones and the sick.
