BOWllANVILLE, JUNE The business vortion of Seattle, t he largest city in Washing ton Territory, is in ashes. Every bank, hotel, and place of amu11ement, all the leading business houses, all the news.pawer offices, railroad depots and miles of steamboat wharves, telegraph offices, coal bunkers, freight warehouses, have been burned. The fire began in a candy factory, Thursday at 2.30 p. m .· and before midnight it had consumed the whole of the business section of the citv. The c-ity is literally wiped out except the resid,..ence portion on high gro.:md. At 6:30 o'clock t he 1flames had reached the wharves and the steamboat and shippin!! were compelled to head out into the stream. A stiff breeze was blowing from the northwest when the fire began, and it l!O On got the best Of the fire department. The water supply gave out within two hours after the fire began, and then the flames had a clear sweep. The ocean ateamEjrB escaped des· truction by putting out into the harbor. A great deal of property was moved only ·to be burned up in other places, so quick· ly did the flames spread. It is estimated t.ha.t the loss by tire to the city in buildinii:s alone is$10,ooo.ooo, and an the personal lesses will probably reach $20,000, 000. It is thought many persons must have perished in the flames. Giant pow. der was used to blow up the buildings in the hope of staying the progr ess of the fire, but,t o no effect.
