O. ughes, Director of CIII- senahilaRd Social Studies, Plttaburth Publie Sehools, .Plttaburgh, Pa. Almost everybody is agreed that educatian is a izaod thingz. M -st people would agree, also, that one reason wbv education is wortbwhile is that it mnay help us ta be good citizesîs.When we talk about civic responsibility, we mnean the duties that ane has as a citizen toward bis governmfent and toward bis f elloy, citizens. We believe that our governuient should represent the wishes of the people and serve the people. We do not want Our rulers to be dictators. We believe that under a democratic government the rights cf every citi- zen are on a level with those cf every ther citizen - so long, cf course, as each citizen plays bis own Part f ully and fairly. We cherisb such ideala as those cf freedom cf speech and cf the press. 0f course these privileges are most valuable cOnly when they are net abused and when the things we think or say cr write corne f rom an ,jmclnestandinz mid. To give us this sound understandiruz is one of the services of our schools. What are sonie of the things we may do in school tbat will help us rigzht now te be good citizens and prepare us for the full practice of ail our rights of citizenship later on? For one tbing, we can talk about the things tbat are izoingz on in the world and try te understand the rea- sons why veople live and act as tbey do. We can establish in our school if e and outside cf school the habit of obeyinR the law. Perhaps there are sanie ruIes and laws tbat we do not like. We bave the rigbht to try ta get themn changed, but, as long as they are the laws, it is our duty to obeýî theni. School can aiso give us experience in acceptiniz and exercisiniz respon- sibility. In gzood schodls we no long- er think of tearjiers and principals as tyraTits and pupits 'as sirnply their subjects. We want pupils to tbink of the school as thefr school whose success or f ailure will be the resait of what they do and what theY get out of it. In every school pupils can accept some responsibility in the daily activities of the school and have a great part in building the ,rigbt kind oS sehool spirit. In school, also, we may bave experience in voting on questions that carne up) for Eteciricat BUY THEM AT "MY TIME 55 YOUR, TIME"Y -And 7alwaathe lh m with a Ge ¶a lcrcTe. chron Clock.
