Early Frost Causes SmaUI Tobacco Damiage Tobacco fields in Durham County have suffered compara- tive'ly littie damage from early fmosts according to Agricultural Representative E. A. Summers who recently toured the district. He bmought back samples of a few leaves showing frost damage. No estimate of percentage of loss in this district is presently avail- able but it is almost negligible as compared with damage in west- ern Ontario. According to press reports the damage to. tobacco crops in the traditional tobacco district noth of Lake Erie is in'excess of two million dollars. Frost fell heavîly on two occasions which added to earlîer losses occasioned by stomms and floods. After a decade of tobacco growing in Durham County the district has neyer suf- femed a major setback. The sample shown by Mr. Sum- mers eveals how frost destroys value of raw tobacco. Patches on the leaves take on the color of imon rust and the sap is exhausted. When dried out the leaves crumble to thin, useless particles. It is fortunate the loss fmom frost is s0 small since acreage has doubled and plans indicate it will be doubled again next yeam. Obituary MRS.
