TEE CANADflW MA'I"1MAlq BI UfIAVTW.?.U bVARn, ___________________________________________ -- .---. --*-----..-~ . - . w ~ é' ~4~~d J.~USDLDA, - LJLMW, i Many in Clarke Township 0f Highland Descent Writes Melville Rue <By Melville Rae iln The Port Hope Guide) "Fmom the lone sheiling of, the maisty island, Mountains divide us and the *waste of the seas, Yet still the blood is strong, the heart is Highland, And we in dreams behold the Hebridese. - Fmom the Canadian Boat Song-Author Uncertain. Upon looking back to the years spent in Clarke Town- ship, the writem has been able to ealize how many of the lo- cal residents who were of High- land Scottish descent or wcre associated with those Clans or families, though they may have made their way to Canada from other parts-especially Ircland. As I arn able to recail there was no actual group settlement of the Scottish folk in the Stark- ville, Newtonville, Kendal area, but there were many families wha bore the names of prom- inent clans and as such would be entitled to weam the tartan and to bear the badge of their kinsmen. I remember only one man, Duncan MacMillan who hived in the Oak Hill district who "had the Gaelic" and read his Gaelic Bible. Others there might have been, but, if so, it was flot generally known In the Starkvi]le arca there were Gordons, Mackays and our family the Raes (or Mac- i-cas). To the north of us werc the Stewamts, and the Mac- Leans. In the Newtonville dis- trict were the Fergusons and the MacNcills and the family of Dr. Mackenzie, who told about being taunted at school because he was a "hielander"; also the Grahams. The Kennedy family who lived north of Elizabeth- ville also were entitled to wear their own tartan and badge; in Hope Township were several families of Hamiltons who have a long history and are entitled to wear a brilliant red and dark green plaid. Though "Mac" meaning "son of" was gcnerally acceptcd as a sort of token of Highland des- cent, there were many clans who had, as we might say, Eng- lish nan-es, such as Armstrongs, Robertson, Davidsons, Elliots, Ierr (or Carr), Hendersoris, Douglas, Dundas and Dunbar to name only a few. Theme are many, many fami- lies who could be bracketed hav- ing been at some time or an- other connected with or under the protection of one of the p ow er ful1 clans: Anderson (R o ss), B e 11 (MacMillan), Clarke (C arn e r on ), Gilroy (Grant), Gray (Stewart), Thompson (Campbell), Wilson (Gunia), White (MacGregor), tMcBride (MacDonald), Stark (Robertson), Staîker (MacFar- lane), Henry <MacNaghtcn), and Watson (Buchanan), Mac- Taggart (Ross), MacLaughlin (MacLachlan). As for Christian or "Christen- ing" siames the men folk, they were rather restmicted and many we hear every day: Duncan, Dd- nald, Angus, Allan and Alas- tair (Alexander). Rananald is flot so common but was muchi used among the MacDonalds; Neil, Hugh and Roderick are other well known names-but only in history do we find Cluny (MacPherson) and Loch- iel (Cameron) which most like- ly were adapted fromn place n ames. Women's names among the Scottish people are of rather an historical touch and rather few in number: Flora MacDonald, Mary of Argyle, "Bonnie" An- nie Lauries, Agnes, Catherine, Jean and Isabel Morra and Fi- ona are others. And watch out at the comning Twelfth of July celebration. there will likely appear some o! the Scottish lodgcs wearing their bright kilts, the sporrans, their Glengarry bonnets and their shoulder plaids. The Co- bourg Kiltie Band wears the Royal Stuart Dress Tartan. Many folks will be waiting to hear the "Skirrl" of the pipes. Are there any young women o! this district who can dance the Highland Fling? In Port Hope there is at least one piper, James Pointon, who we have often seen piping home the Co- bourg football teamn after a winning garne. Rochester Products Division o!
