Of3as andi £Pteces BRIGHT LIGHTS - The Bowmanville Public Utilities building has had a brilliant face-lifting with a new coat of paint, in red, white and blue, applied by Rowe & Burgess. The paint has made a tremendous improvement to the building. t i.t t i. DRAGSTERS -There probably will be a mass exodus of local devotees of car racing on Sunday when the Canadian National Drag Races take place on the strip at Deseronto. This sport has expand- ed its support during the past couple of years and is now attracting many young participants who own high powered vehicles. T t t t t FREE BOWLING - Faîl is fast approaching. This week, manager George Elliott announces the opening of Liberty Bowl for the season. Next Wednesday and Thursday will be given over to new bowlers who will receive free bowling start- ing at 7 p.m. The alleys have been resurfaced and should be in great shape for the coming season. t t t~ t t OUR FACE IS RED - One way of finding out how many people read The Statesman is to make an error. Last week, there was a dandy that pro- duced so my 'phone calîs, our lines were tied up for hours. The wrong photo appeared over a caption describing the Howcrof t - Owen wedding. We have corrected it with the proper photo this week. The gremlins were at work, apparently. Our apologies to those concerned. t t t i. t NEW LIGHTING - Roy MeMullen's hardware store has taken on a much brighter appearance recently with the installation of 8-foot fluorescent lighting and the application of white paint on the ceiling. tt t t t ONE WEEK TO GO - With just over a week to go before schools open for the faîl term, teachers have been in town looking for apartments. Inci- dentally, there is a great shortage here. On Tues- day, the Editor received two callers looking for two or three bedroom homes for rent. Even smaller apartments are in short supply. Anyone with such accommodation would be well advised to let it be known through the columns of The Statesman. We would guarantee they will receive fast action and many applications. t t t t t GOOD SHOW - Those who have attended the CNE tell us that the grandstand show is well warth seeing, especially the Mounties who per- form the musical ride so colorfully. Singer Bob Goulet does a good job too, and the dancers are tremendous but we agree with those who feel that big name stars are not essential to the pro- gram., i. t t t t SAM'S WIN - In the junior softball playoffs on Tuesday evening, Sam's Finer Foods went one game ahead of Chartran's, winning 7 ta 3. Stand- ing is now two games to one. Fourth game, in the best four out of seven series, will go Thursday night at the High School diamond. t t t t t CATTLE SALE - There wiill be another big cattie sale on Thursday, August 29th at Trew- haven Farm, just south of Blackstock, when 50 Holstein cattle will be put on the block. These regular sales have been a popular event for some time, attracting buyers from a wide area. At the sale on August lst, one of the big buyers was from Puerto Rico.
