R. Scott, B. A., Mathematical Master ably presided in the absence through ilness of Principal W. J. Morrison, B. A. It will be remembered thgt, the first debate in the interscholastic con- test took place at Whitby on Febru- ary 3, between Oshawa and Whitby, our school having drawn the bye. The debaters then were W. Taylor aud Kathleen McLaughlin for Oshawa school and Melville Kenney and Mary Howard for Whitby school.- Oshawa won the decision. Thus it was that two other Oshawa student7, came to Bowmanville to take part ia the ifinal contest for the Shield presented by Messrs. Jury & Loveli to the school win»ing the interachool debate. Mr. Alex. Hall and Miss Margaret Lochead representing the Oshawa High School spoke to the negative and Mr. Lawrence Mason and Miss Helen McGregor the Bowmanville school, the affirmative. TiÉ.-dge1. There is no doubt about it-this towu bas not felt the depression to tbe extent that many towns and cities throughout Canada have experienced duil times the past few montbs. It is not mere words to say business is good lu BowiRanville, but it may be trutbfully said that business is booming. Every local industry is now working full time with ,one exception. Goodyear mub- ber plant took on considerable' addi- tional belp this week; Thomson Kuit- ting Co. started a 24-bour service on Monday night to keep up witb its or- ders; Ross Can Co. bas been working overtinie for several months; Bow- manville Foundry Co. bas orders booked ahead to keep tbem going steady tilI Faîl; and Canada Scale & Slicer Co. bas neyer experienced such a demand .for its slicers as at the present time. Dominion Cannera Ltd. is also making preparations for the largest output since locating lu Bowmauville. Another indication of the prosper- ous times iu Bowmanville is the large number of real estate sales reported recently. These desirable local con- ditions combined with the fact that ts town is surrouuded ýby one of tho best and most prosperous agricultural districts in the province carnies out that oft repeated saying "Bowman- manville is a _gqod pacluwcht BIG DRIVE IN FULL SWING King-st. was alive with citizens earlier than usual Thursday morning it beiflg the opening day for the Chamber of Comn- merce Membership Campaign. The town boos ers were up with the chickens "te catch the early Worm", Theres a real competit on on for neW members the executive being divic[ed in- to two teams with President A. M. Ha.r- dy and Vice-President R. E. Wilson as Captains. The side getting the smnallest nuimber of members provides the where- w t-h-all for a banquet for the winners. Both sides are so confident of victory. thiat already some are boasting of the frece meal they are going te enjoy. Some amusing incidents are being told of this lively contest: We know of au ex-reeve and clergyman who had their siombers disturbed Thursday morning by these campalgners. Alan Campbell will aiso tell yen how easy it was to soll a ticket to our local M. P., while a member of the other teamn was enjoying a chat with Mr. Bowen on subject of Reciprocîty. -Art Hardy is looking for the man who beat hlm to the Slicer factory and enroîl- ed eight members before 8.30 a. m. Dr. Bonnycastie says it causes more paJx to extract $ $ fromn some citizens th&t a tooth. Rush for tickets was seO great that before il o'clock a hurry up order was sent to the printer for more mem- bership tickets. If there should be a citizen who has been overlooked show the execûtive that your heart la in the right place by tell- ing them yen feel offended you were overlooked.. Insist upon joining this live organization and do your part te put Bowmanville on the map in big lettersî. Campaign closes March 16th. Naines of executive appear on page 2.
