8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Oct. 24, 1973 Section Two Ontario Hydro Photû New Trees For Hydro Facilities Over 4,500 large trees were planted during the first nine months of 1973 on Ontario Hydro rights-of-way and around transformer stations throughout the province. Tree spades mounted on large front-end loaders or on muskeg tractors plant up to 40 trees daily, among them white birch, Austrian pine, hard maple and red oak. The equipment digs up and plants trees from 10 to 25 feet tall and up to six inches in girth at the base, weighing as much as two tons. After the planter sets the tree in a hole it has pre-dug, forestry crews tamp the earth, then water, fertilize, and guy the tree, pruning it if necessary. Most trees to date have been transplanted from other sites, but during con- struction of new lines, many will be relocated within natural habitats if their original position is jeopardized. Tree planting is part of Hydro's continuing program to meet the public's desire to have utilities blend with surroundings. IProv October 16, 1973 Judge R. B.
