The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, May 29, 1974 School Dental Health Program Produces Amazing Results Poor oral hygiene among elementary school pupils, in the four counties served by the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit, has been halved. A classroom dental health program, which was begun three years ago, is accredited with this dental achievement. Dr. Dennis Warrick, Direct- or of Dental Services for the unit, stated in a report to the Northumberland and New- castle Board of Education, that the results shown in the Northumberland and New- castle county are even more improved. A computerized survey was conducted in ýthe 1970-1971 school year, which investigat- ed the oral hygiene of pupils of kindergarten to grade eight inclusively. Another such sur- vey was, once again, conduct- ed this year. The average of poor oral hygiene was, 31.4 per cent in the first survey, and only 15 per cent in the second survey. The incidence of poor oral hygiene for Northumberland an Newcastle for the 1970- 1971 report was 30.9 per cent, while the report conducted in the final year stated a marked decrease to 12 per cent. Dr. Warrick, in his report, accredited this improvement to the classroom dental health education program. In the first survey the percentage of pupils discover- ed to have no deca was 37. The final survey showed an increase to 45.3 per cent. Unfortunately, the number of children needing urgent dental health care, did not display such a great decline. The statistics quoted for the 1970-1971 survey were 14.2 ver cent. while last vear's figures indicated a drop to only 12 per cent. The term urgent, as em- ployed in the report, is defined in terms of a child possessing six or more decayed teeth requiring treatment; or a large cavity in a permanent tooth or an abscessed tooth. Dr. Warrick attributes this small measure of improve- ment to the fact that many of these children are from mar- ginal income families, and are Carter's Bakery SUMMER HOURS EFFECTIVE JUNE 10 TO SEPT. 2 Monday Closed Thurs. 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Tues. 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Fri. -9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Wed. 9 a.m. -6 p.m. Sat. - 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. CLOSED FROM JULY 21 TO AUG. 6 FOR STAFF VACATIONS Thank You, The Management Iùry Cleaners Cs4ucUe An antique collector passing through a small village stopped to wvatch an old man chopping wood with an ancient axe. It is expounded by Dr. Warrick, that the no decay category is the superIior indi- cator of the program evalua- tion, comparison and plan- ning, because a reduction in tooth decay is the objective for all preventive measures. "We should be quick to point out that a preventive dental program canot ho pe to bring the ercentage of no decay children over 50 per cent withough the utilization of fluoridation", Dr. Warrick proclaimed. Continuing he stated, "This simple measure could provide a reduction in tooth decay of up to 66 percent for those children living in cent- res served by municipal water suppplies, and 45 percent of our population obtain their water in that way. It seems that the dental program, as practiced by the pupils, made extensive use of fluoride supplements, such as tablets and drops, as an alternative method. KENDAL Mrs. H.
