GOOD BARN VENTILATION NECESSARY DURING THE WINTER Farmers should aim to ventilate their barns so well that you would enjoy living in it. Good ventilation helps ensure that your animals remain healthy and produce high quality food quickly. Dustdampness and stale air appear to trigger respiratory diseases such as pneumonia. It is not surprising that off-flavours in milk are some- times caused by stable odours and the quality of other products may also be affected. Odour levels decrease as the excess moisture in the air is removed. To run the ventilation equipment necessary for drawing air into your barn and expelling it after it has absorbed the buildings excess moislure., Make sure you have adequate and safe electrical wiring. In addition, always use fuses of the proper size. If the fuses are too big they will increase the risk of fire by overloading the wiring. Make sure fans, motors, air inlets and exit shutters are clean and in good working order. Use insulation to keep as much animal heat as possible in your barn, so that incoming air will be heated and will absorb excess moisture. El- iminate cracks and gaps and loose fitting doors and win- dows and protect the buildings from as much wind and weather as is possible by windbreak. If you are havin problems with respiratory diseases in your livestock or you feel the air in your barn is too damp, contact the Agricultural Of- fice in Bowmnyiille and we will be able to take a look at the ventilation system and assess whether or not it is of the proper size to do the job that is required.
