The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October 23. 1974 5 OBITUARIES JAMES CHARLES MASSE Y James Charles, Massey, 77, of RR 6, Bowmanville, died at ,-%e the flnwma2nvillé Memorial Hospital Friday at the age of 77. A former resident of Niag- ara St. in St. Cathiarines, Mr. Massey .had been in failing health for four years. He came to Canada from England in 1914 and settled at Ashburn. In the intervening years he lived in Oshawa, Toronto and St. Catharines, before moving to Bowman- ville in May, 1974, to live with his son. He was employed at Gen- eral Motors in Oshawa and St. Catharines for more than 30 years and retired in 1962. Mr. Massey served with the 116th- Battalion overseas in the First World War and was discharged in 1916. He was a member of Facer St. Baptist Church in St. Cathar- mes. Mr.1ý Massey's first wife, Mabel, died in 1956 and bis sec ond wife Elizabeth in 1974. A son, Cecil, of Mount Forest, died in 1973, and two sisters in England also predeceased him. Mr. Massey is survived by three sons, Ronald of RR 6, Bowmanville, Lloyd, of RR 1, Hampton, and Percy of Osh- awa; two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Carmichael, Oshawa, Mrs. Walter Klapow (Lucile), of Wilberforce, Ont. Five sisters, Mrs . Evelyn Parrott, Oshawa; Mrs. Alfred Welsh (Ada); Mrs. J. Brown (Eleanor); Mrs. A. Matthews, (Clara); Mrs. A. Davies (ELsie), four brothers, Celcil, Joseph and Charles Massey, ail in England, and George 1\assey of Ottawa. Mr. Massey is also survived by 18 grandchildren. and nine great grandchildren. Mr. Massey rested at the Winter and Winter Funeral Home, St. Catharines. Ser- vices were held in, the chapel Tuesday. Interment in Pleas- antview Memorial Gardens. BEN FOWLER A veteran of World War Il, Ben Fowler, aged 63, passed away in Oshawa General Hospital, on Sunday,,October 6, 1974, following a day's illness. Born in Cartwright Town- ship, and educated in Oshawa, he was the son of the late John and Ethel Fowler. Married on December 7, 1940 to Mabel Sears, they had resided in Bowmanviîle at 76 Ontario ,Street for 25 years, previously residing in Whitby. Retired for 2 years, he had been a mechanic with 1867 g arage, Courtice, and Turn- ball's Esso 401 at Newcastle. A Protestant church mem- ber, he was also an avid hockey fan, and coached boy's hockey teamns in Bowmanville in the 1960's. He also liked outdoor sports, boating and fishing. "i aSurviving besides bis wife is \ Westville, N.S., a son Nelson, at home, and two grandchild- ren. Mr. Fowler rested at the Morris Funeral Chapel for service on Wednesday with Reverend J.S. Gilchrist offici- ating. Pall-bearers were ail neph- ews, Messrs. Arnold Tri1~ Phil Skinner, Doug Burleig Hon, Wayne and John Fowler. Floral tokens were received from the Bowmanville Legion and LOBA No. 1291 Lodge. MRS. EDMUND C.C. SOUTHEY Mrs. Edmund C.C. Southey, the former Mary Campbell Strange, of 745 Stevenson Rd. N., Oshawa, died at Oshawa General Hospital on Sunday, Oct. 13, 1974, following a lengthy illness. She was born in Kingston, Ont., on Aug. 27, 1895, the daughter of t he late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Strange. Mrs. Southey was educated in Kingston, and lived 'in Bowmanville before movîng to Oshawa in 1953. She was a member of St. George's Ang- 1948. A tobacco grower for 14, years, hie had been employed the past nine years as a saw operator for Curvply Wood Products, Ltd. Orono. A member of the Roman Catholic Church, Mr. Jonck- heere, is survived by bis wife, and a sister, Mrs. Noehla Demeulenaere, Belgium. Father Frank Mihelic con- ducted the funeral service from St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bowmanville, on Monday. Mr. Jonckheere rested at the Morris Funeral Chapel, prior to the service. Paîl-bearers were Messrs. Sterling Mather, Jack Chap- man, Edgar Meuleman, Ro- ger Demeulenaere, George and Alfred Daepaepe. Interment was in Bowman- ville Cemetery.
