Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October 30,1974 11 Dedicate 2 Memorial Windows at Trinity Churcb Auxiliary Holds Successful 28th Birthday Party A highlight in the history of Trinity United Church was the dedication of two beautiful memorial windows on Sunday, October 20, 1974, during the morning service. Gordon Barrie, chairman of the Board of Stewards, presented the windows for dedication and they were accepted by Rev. Wesley Oake as a sacred trust with reverence and gratitude. The window in the east side of the sanctuary was erected by the congregation in loving memory of Mr. and Mrs. Milton J. Elliott. William Reid represented the family in the dedication. In the west side the window was a gift in loving memory of Harry V. Cryderman by his wife Clio, who took part in the dedication of this window. 650Increase in Durham Night Classés Night School enrollment this Fall at Durham College shows a considerable increase over last year. Todate 3274 students have registered, 650 students over last year's fall enroll- ment at this time. General Interest courses which have proved very popular this fall are Antique Collecting (56 students); Beauty and Charm (71 stu- dents); Basic Bookeeping (33 students); Beginner's French by Beryl Hughes The 28th Birthday Party of the Bowmanville Ladies Auxi- liary to the Royal Canadian Legion, held in the Legion Hall on Monday evening, October 21st, was an outstandingly successful event. It was great- ly enjoyed by the large number of members present and their guests. President, Nance Colmer, presided. Others at the Head Table were, Zone Comman- der, Audrey Bate, President, Stan Dunn of Branch 178 of the Legion, Immediate Past Pre- sident, Ed Najer, Branch 178's Liaison Officer for the auxilia- ry, the auxiliary's officers, Immediate Past President, Trixie Brown, Vice-president, Nyhl Sheehan, 2nd Vice-presi- dnt, Marie Bissonette, Secre- tary, Dorothy Richards and Treasurer, Rena Bathgate. The chief executives of the eight other Legion Ladies Auxiliaries in the Zone and a guest were also at the Head Table as follows: Ajax Presi- dent, Flo Hayes, Comrade Mary Sibbion, Bay Ridges 1st Vice-president, Gladys Chil- ten, Comrade Phyliss Pillar, Brooklin, President, Mary Jean Herron and Comrade Joan Grills, Claremont, Pre- sident, Jean Bradshaw, Com- rade Amy Clarke, Oshawa, President, P. Boivin, Com- rade Helen Anderson, Port Perry, President, June Symes, Comrade Clare War- ren, Uxbridge, President, Grace Foote, Comrade Hil- dreth Lyons, Whitby, Presi- dent, Mary Stanlick, Comrade Dorothy Mclvor. Memorial Park Association catered for the delicious supper and served it. The attractively iced huge Birth- day Cake was jointly cut by two honored Life Members, Comrades Violet Sommer- scales and Annie Clapp. Birth- day gifts for all present were distributed by the Gift Commi- ttee, President Colmer. Past (54 Students); Flower Ar- ranging (35 students); Con- versational German (39 stu- dents; Basic Guitar (61 stu- dents); Interior Decoration (83 students); Introductory Macrame (39 students); Sew- ing 1 (41 students); Spanish for Beginners (33 students); Basic Welding (32 students); and Yoga for Beginners (64 students). Applied Arts courses with most registration are Basic Photography (41 students); Drawing and Watercolouring (41 students); and Psychology (63 students). Business Division courses with record enrolîment are Accounting Fundamentals (70 students); Basic Data Pro- cessing (32 students); Busi- ness Law (31 students); Busi- ness Organization (44 stu- dents) and Effective Super- vision Administration (41 stu- dents). The Secretarial cours- es are again well subscribed, with 50 students taking Fork- ner shorthand 1, 27 students taking Pitman shorthand 1, 83 students taking Typewriting 1, and 35 students taking Type- writing IA. The Ontario Real Estate Association courses continue to have a strong appeal with 111 enrolled in the various cours- es. Technology Division cours- es which have proven to be most popular this year are Dental Radiology (27 stu- dents); Electronic Fundame- ntals (21 students); and Math- ematics 1 (25 students). The Nursing course which has strongest enrollment is Nursing Sciences 1, with 36 students enrolled. Canada Power Squadron courses continue to attract a good number of students, with 153 enrolled in the various courses. In regard to Off-Campus courses, there are seven courses mounted at the Ajax High School with 59 students enrolled. MORE DRIVERS The number of licenced drivers in Canada is increas- ing at a rate greater than the population growth, says the Ontario Safety League. In 1962, approximately one third of the population held drivers licences. In 1972, almost half the population were licenced drivers. According to Statis- tics Canada figures, there were $10,513,555 licenced drivers in 1972. The estimated population that year was 21,830,000. E. liary on Monday, October 28th, will leave the Legion Hall at 6:45 p.m. 1st Vice-president Sheehan, President Brown and Treasur- er Bathgate.e A highlight of the evening was the presentation by Presi- dent Colmer to president Dunn of a cheque for $1,600 from the auxiliary for Branch 178. In thanking the organization for its generous gift, president Dunn expressed the branch's apreciation of the loyal sup- port and generous financial gifts from the local Legion Ladies Auxiliary over many years. The Bowmanville Golden Legionnaires gave a wonder- ful musical program in which the excellent voices blended advantageously to delight the large audience. Director John Crookshank led the memora- ble vocal selections and play- ed the piano accompaniment. The selections were: "Glee Club" with four part singing, "Kentucky Babe," then a hymn arrangement '"O Wor- ship The King," "Walk with God," followed by "Edel- wiess" from "The Sound of Music" with James Fair as the fine soloist, "No Man Is an Island," "Aura Lee," and "In The Gloaming." The closing number , a splendid rendition of "Nature's Praise of God,", was awarded an enthusiastic standing ovation by the listen- ers. On behalf of the auxiliary, 2nd Vice-president Bissonette thanked the Legionnaires and presented a cheque. During a short business meeting, plans for the auxilia- ry's Euchre Team were made for its participation in the Regional Euchre Tournament to be held in Gananoque, next Saturday. Those on the team are: 1st Vice-president Shee- han, Comrades Anne Piper, Jess Lightfoot and Florence Knight. President Colmer an- nounced that the bus to take local members to the Social Evening to be given by the Uxbridge Legion Ladies Auxi- Specia I 51 King St. East assistedby~Comrade Lightfoot was in charge of the Sports Draw. The winners were comrade Sibbion, Ajax, and 178 President Dunn. Those in charge of the Main Draw were:Comrade Jean Burton and Past President Brown.
