They reported deep snow and ideal skiing conditions on their return. FLASHBACK-10 YEARS AGO-Miss Avelyne Lycett, 13, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Lycett, R.R. 2, Orono, won the Grand Champ- ion Ferguson award for Senior Ladies Open Class, in the Peterborough Figure Skating Club, plus a first in Senior Ladies Pairs and a tied first in Senior Ladies Dance. HOCKEY NEWS-Preston the Mover Major Atom hockey team, have defeated Bay Ridges, and are now awaiting the semi-final series, against Whitby. The Bay Ridges - Bowmanville series went to the fifth game, providing lots of action for the fans. The semi-final series begins Thursday evening at 7:00 in the Darlington Sports Centre. CONGRATULATIONS-to Ted Puk, of Bow- manville Sport Midgets, who earned a hat trick in the fourth and deciding game of the series, against Gananoque. LABATT'S DOUBLES-Squash Championships go this weekend, March 14 - 15 - 16 at the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club. Canada's top team, Gord Anderson, Toronto and Montreal's Peter Martin, have entered. In all, about 25 teams are expected. TABLE TENNIS-is available every Thursday evening in Newcastle Community Hall from 7 - 10 p.m., arranged by the town recreation department. SCOUTING-Kevin Crews, Port Perry, Paul Kerry, lst Scugog Company, Richard Rudkin and Peter Kristensen, of the Cartwright Venturer Company, and Tim Pearce of the 2nd Scugog Group, will represent Scouting and the district, at Nordjam '75 the 14th World Scouting Jamboree, held this year in Norway. EXHIBITION GAMES-will be held this Wed- nesday at 7 in the local arena, against an Osh- awa Triple A club, and on Sunday at 6, against a Triple A club from Peterborough, with H.W. Knapp Towing Major Bantams, the opposition in both games. Bowmanville won their series against Napanee three games straight, and are waiting for the semi-finals against the winners Of the Hespeler.- Hwntsville series. CONGRATULA TIONS-to the Bowmanville Sports Midget Club, who won their series against Gananoque here, Sunday, in the fourth game. They now await word on their next series. 40 HANDICAPPED-children are enrolled this year in an experimental ski program, sponsor- ed by the Ontario Society for Crippled Children. Known as Track Three Ski, the program was designed to give less fortunate children a chance to learn the sport of skiing. Ten year old Mustaq Khan, of Whitby is doing quite well for his first year, and also is keen on most sports, including hockey and swimming. The ski pro- gram starts with a six-week course, of inten- sive exercises including arm swings, hopping on the spot, push-ups and wall sit-ups. Instead of ski poles the children use crutches with mini- skis on the ends and operated by cables from a hand grip. ANYONE INTERESTED-in joining the Mens' Softball League must have their name registered at Frank's Variety Store or D. & R. Sports by March 30, 1975. Anyone who joins this league will not be allowed to play ball for any other league. FOUR WINNERS-So far this year, Bowman- ville has four hockey teamis all set to advance into the next round of playoffs. Knapp's Towing Major Bantams, Bowmanville Sports Major Midgets, Preston the Movers Major Atoms and W. Frank's Major Peewees. That's a mighty good showing and indicates that there still will be plenty of exciting hockey ahead. Our sympathies go out to the teams who have been eliminated. Better luck next year and for the balance of this year as most of themi will now be participating in area tournaments and exhibi- tion games. The coaches, trainers and other officials of all the young teams are to be com- mended for their dedication and their interest, even when their particular team isn't winning. Playoffs The Bowmanville Preston the Mover Major Atom Toros eliminated the Bay Ridges Major Atoms from the O.M.H.A. Playoffs on Satur- day, March 8th, handing them a 7-3 defeat in the fifth game of the best of five series. On Wednesday evening in the Don Beer Arena in Bay Ridges, the home club defeat- ed the Toros 4-2 to tie the series at two games each. Bay Ridges opened the scoring in the first period. Barry Cullen connected for Bowmanville at the 7:35 mark in the middle stanza to tie the score, Bill Hogarth assisting. Rod Plain sent the Toros in front at the 6:17 mark, unassisted. In the third period, the host club tallied three times to clinch the victory, the last goal scored into the empty net with one second remaining. Steve Skene was in goal for the Toros and play brilliantly to keep the score at a respectable number, with his team-mates affording him very little support. On Saturday in Bowman- ville, the Toros played very well putting a full effort into the game, with accurate passing and very solid check- ing, both on defence as well as the forwards. The Toros wasted no time starting things off. Brian Ruddy scored at the 17 sec. mark, assisted by his rightwinger Barry Cullen. Ruddy scored again 35 se- conds later, assisted by his wingers Cullen and Bill Ho- garth. Hogarth scored the third goal, assisted by Ruddy and Cullen. Bay Ridges struck back with two goals in the first period to narrow the margin to 3-2 at the end of the first period. In the second period, Steve Cary blasted one from the point with the assists on the plav going to Mike Stocker and John Klompmaker, a very pretty passing play. Barry Cullen scored the fifth Toro goal, assisted by Brian Ruddy and Ed Osborne. Hogarth scored his second goal, the assists going to Ruddy, who played magnificently in this game, and Rick Erwin. Erwin fired the seventh goal, a blazing shot from just inside the blue-line after stealing the puck from a Bay Ridges defender. The visitors scored their third goal late in the game. Ken Woodard was in goal for Bowmanville and was very sharp picking up the victory in a very tough five-game series. The Preston the Movers now meet Brooklin-Whitby in the next round of the playoffs. Knapp's Towing Bantams Finish Off Napanee Stars In Three Knapp's Towing Major Ban- tams completed a three game route with the Napanee North Stars on Sunday by chalking up a 6-4 win to win the O.M.H.A. Eastern Division. The next opposition for the team will be the winners of the Huntsville-Hespeler series. The opening game for that series should get underway around the 20th of March. In the 6-4 win Sunday, Scott Stevens opened the scoring at the 8:16 mark, assisted by Dean Rutherford to give Bowmanville a 1-0 edge at the end of the first period. Knapp's waltzed into a 4-0 lead in the second period as Rutherford put Bowmanville Straight ahead 2-0 set up by Don Farrow and Brent Badour Gerard Morrison increased the lead to 3-0 with a blast from close in, Rutherford assisting. Brad Godfrey rounded out the scoring in the period combining with line- mate Gary Dusseldorp for the score., Napanee got on the score board early in the third period, Dwight Williams un- assisted. Bowmanvillepopped in two more goals, Rutherford his second of the game and Ed Visser, Brad Godfrey and Scott Stevens assisted. Bowmanville relaxed a little at this point and Napanee took advantage of the situation, Games scoring three unanswered goals in the last five minutes of play. Britt Murphy and Brian Fraser shared the goaltending duties for Bowmanville and both played steady. Fraser took a hard shot off the face mask early in the third period but after some fast patch work by the St. John's crew, returned to action but was relieved by Murphy with seven minutes remaining in the period. The game was played before the largest crowd of the season and it was a good sign of things to come. The next play-off game will be published in this paper and announced over radio. W. Frank's Major Peewees Wîpe Ouf Npanee Advance to Sem i-Finals Playing in Napanee on Saturday, March 8, Frank's defeated Napanee in the third game of a best of five series by a score of 6-2. Scott Brady opened the scoring for Nap- anee with less than a minute gone in the game. Toros came back with a goal by Rob DeBoo, taking a good pass from Chuck Welsh. OWEN SOUND GREYS-defeated Collingwood, in the fifth game of the series to win the mid-Ontario Junior B hockey title for the third consecutive year. Don Sturrock has been with the Greys for two years and Byron Holmes has been with them one year. Danny Cowle was on the team the first year they won. The Greys now meet Waterloo in the Quarter finals, 'which begin Wednesday night in Waterloo. Getting a pretty goal was Steve Braun as he deflected a good pass from Stan Green- ham into the Napaneennet with the other assist going to Darrell Go'dey. Near the end of the second Dave Losee scored for Napanee making it 3-2. In the third, Rick Simpson from the faceoff at centre, tiped the puck totRob DeBoo who returned it to Simpson behind the Napanee defence and he drove a backhand from just inside the blue line, past the Napanee goalie.- One minute later Terry Riggers, carrying the puck out of our end zone, crossed the centre red line and caught Rick Simpson on the fly at their blue line with a perfect pass. He deked the Napanee defence and blasted a hard shot for our fifth goal. Two minutes later Chuck Welsh picked up a stray Napanee pass and zoomed past their defence at our blue line and skated in alone and deked their goaltender before slip- ping the puck into a then open net. Holding Napanee to one shot in the third period and playing a very steady game were our defence core, consisting of Dale Broome, Terry Riggers, Kevin Noble and Stan Green- ham. Our goaltender Mark Shackelton and Paul Lavigne both played great, holding the opposition to 2 goals per game with our team outscoring Napanee 17 goals to 6 in the series. On Wednesday, March 5, W. Frank's played the second game of the series in Bowman- ville winning by a score of 5-2 over Napanëe. Garf McQuaid opened the scoring in the first period with a good shot from the slot area, setup by Randy MacDonald and Terry Rig- gers. Playing another of his exceptional games and col- lecting a total of 4 goals in the game was Rick Simpson with the hat trick in the second period. Assisting on Rick's first goal was Chuck Welsh and Rob DeBoo. On his second was Darrell Goudey and our goaltender Paul Lavigne, who also made many outstanding saves throughout the game. Assisting on Simpson's third goal and his second assist of the game was Randy Mac- Donald. Napanee came out flying in the third and scored two goals, the first hy Peter Hinch and the second by Andy Denison. Ending the scoring with a deserving fourth goal was Rick Simpson, as he was being hauled down from behind slid the puck along the ice past the Napanee goaltender. Assists on the goal went to Steve Braun and Stan Greenham. Frank's Pee Wees are now waiting to take on the winner between Huntsville and Hes- peler for the semi-final series. Minor Bontams Lose 3 Games The H. L. Wood Transport Minor Bantams continued their winless streak by losing three exhibition games last week. On Thursday the Toros travelled to Oraf ton where Cobourg handed the Transpor- ters a 5-3 setback in a well palyed game. Scoring for Bowmanville were Steve Frank, Jacky Pinch, and Scott Clifton with Ken Cowle, Mur- ray Ruddy, Bill Wright, Clif- ton and Frank drawing assists. Whitby bombed the locals 7-1 Saturday. Paul Cascag- nette scored the only goal for the lack-lustre Toros on an unassisted effort. The Minor Bantams im- proved greatly in their game against Oakwood which saw the visiting Oakwood squad score two goals in the last four minutes to eke out a 5-4 win. John Stewart led the Toros in their losing effort by rapping in three goals. Jody Ross notched the other while Bill Wright, Paul Cascagn'ette, Greg Brunt, Wayde Preston, Jim Hogarth, Ross and C ifton all drew single assists. It was a hart hitting game in wbich Jacky Pinch sustained a broken rib. The big right winger will be sidelined for the balance of the season. Toros are in action this week with exhibition contests against Sunderland and Hill- crest. Beers' Minor Atoms opened their semi-final playoff series in Bay Ridges on Thursday, March 6, but were set back by a 5-3 score. After a scoreless first per- iod, Robbie Green and Tim Preston gave Bowmanville a 2-0 lead. Green's goal was assisted by Preston and Tim Little. Bay Ridges closed the gap before the end of the second, then took a 3-2 lead with two quick goals early in the final stanza. Robbie Green scored his second of the game from Preston to tie the score. However, Bay Ridges fought bard and scored two more goals for the 5-3 victory. Scott Bate played the entire game in net for the Toros. Bowmanville vastoutshot 16-11. There was a total of 5 penalties in the game. Tie Second Ga me The second game of the series, played in Bowmanville on Saturday, March 8, wa-rn exciting, penalty-filled ba, ending in a 3-3 tie, even after a period of overtime. Robbie Green, who played another great game, started the scoring off with a goal assisted by Trevor Martyn and Mike Glass. Bay Ridge- quickly tied it up. Tim Prestonr gave the lead to the Toros with a nice individual effort. Bow- manville took a 3-1 lead as Green got bis second of'the gare, from Sbaughn Houston and Jeff Logan. Before three periods were up, the visitors had tied the score. This forced an overtime period, but no one scored.
