Section Two The Canadian Statesman, BowmanvileArl217 Trees for Canada "Trees for Canada" is an ideal opportunity for Scouting to do a three-way good turn - for the country, for the boy who partici- pates and for Scouting at al levels. Each participant - boy or leader - commits himself to plant a designated number of trees. People are asked to sponsor the participant at an amount per tree as, is done in a walk-a-thon. No one can deny the benefit to the boy. His participation in such an environmental project will give him a first hand association with the problems facing the country concerning forest coverage. lis present profit is the pride in taking part in a big project which helps develop the country. The growing forest will be a constant reminder to hlm and others of his participation in a practical, useful good turn durîng his youth. This project is also ideally suited to reinforce and enlarge Scouting's program in the outdoors and ecology. It also can be directly linked to star and badge requirements. LOCAL PLANTING MAY lOth 1975 TWO MILLION TREES Two million trees will be planted in Canada this year by. Scouts participating in the "Trees For Canada" project. In every province and the Northwest Territories, Scouts will be expressing their concern for their country through planting trees. The resuits of this project will be a more beautiful Canada, a land which is less susceptible to flooding and a future source of vital raw materials. The "Trees For Canada" project was launched on a trial basis in Ontario in 1972. A similar ptogra 'm 'Trees for Tomorrow' was undertaken in Manitoba. Both of these projects have proven that Scouts enjoy the op portunity to get personally involved in contributing to the future of Canada. "'Trees For Canada" is a fund raising project. Most of the funds stay in the community where it is raised. Some goes to the international brotherhood program "Operation Amigo". This is a four year programi designed to help five South American Scout Associations adapt the Scout program to the needs of their boys. The funds are raised through pledges from people in each comrnunity' involved. In most communities only one, contact will be made with a householder. This, combined with knowing how many trees the Scout -will plant, makes it easy to determine how much to pledge. Two million trees will reach their maturity when the Scouts who plantedthem have children of their own. "Trees For Canada" is a project concerned with tomorrow. A tomorrow which willbe better because communities supported the Scouts in this project today. How many Canadians are aware of the value Trees play in our country's environment? Not too rnany, the environmental people say. Here are important factors which Co-ordina- tors and District Representatives can transmit to your respective Groups, Lea ders, Resource 5k people, Parents, etc. Let's have a few sessions at Pack, Troop, Company or Crew meetings, on Trees for Canada 1975. OXYGEN - A full grown spruce tree releases into the atmosphere one to two pounds of oxygen per day. A forest which contains 500 such trees per acre plus 2,000 smaller ones, and covers approximately 14,400 forested acres or 7,200,000 trees, releases 12 to 14 million pounds of oxygen per day. COOLING - Each tree vaporizes, 50 to 200 gallons of water each day... .about 1,000,000 B.T.U.'s. This cooling equals 10 room-size air conditioners operating 24 hours per, day.
