6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville. October 15, 1975 Communications Prom Page Five deal was made with one newspaper, to the effect that the reporter would not take notes of discussions at work- shops. This was unforgive- able. What did the Task Force have to hide? Is it afraid of ublic opinion, when it asks opublic input on the destiny of 60,000 people in Northum- berland? The weak excuse for Con- mittee of the Whole is that members of the Board of Council can frtely express their opinions. This is utter hogwash and has no place in a democracv, where the essence of freedom is free expression of opinion, without fear or favor. Does the poitician wish to state the tîtth in private, and live the lie in public? 1 reported what was said in the Press Conference work- shops, and what was said was forthright and good copy. There have been no coin- plaints. Conditioning I believe the press helps to condition those in public office. Why should Prime Minister Trudeau be permit- ted to hide f rom a four-letter word hie may utter in public? Why should a Board member ask not to be quoted, as one Board member did recently? If it should not be printed, it should flot have been said. The public has to know how representatives react on per- tinent issues. How else do they know how to vote? Otherwise denîouracy is a shambles and a mockery! (Human Beings Howard Rusk Long, former Professor at. Southern Illlinois University, Illinois, still writes for the publication Grassroots Editor. This is one of his comments: "People are human beings and have the right to enjoy the dignity of the indlviLdal, without being mass fed or mass led. The editor's res- ponsibility is not to the politician or to the large advertiser: it is to the person who receives the written word, the indivîdual subscrib- er. The reporter of course has the responsibility to make sure that the information hie obtains is correct and reliable and is, accurately presented" Concerning the human fact- or of mistakes, Joseph Small wood, former premier of Newfoundland, said: "I havt inade more than one mistake. The only man, who makes no mistakes is a man who does nothing and that is a mis- take." James Ralph Mutchmor, a moderator of The United Church, stressed: "If you think it, say it. Get it out. Tien people can argue about it, and. ir you are wrollgè, you wîfl at least know." Fýinal Rendering When we as a 1ope have fuily matured to face the oenness of life in the market- plac of opinion antl a free press, let us remember the words of the late, J. V. McAree, a Globe and Mail coiumnis t: "Experience has taught us that there are,,some problems for which there is no answer, and there are cîrcumstances in which the best of men cannot make a move that will not be regretted later. There is no right move to make. Every move will be wrong. The ancient wisdome of mankind sums the thing up in the saying about a choice between &vils." MAPLERGROVE W..
