8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October 15, 1975 Section Two Out of the Mouths of Babes bv E.P. Chant 1 truly respect the person 1 arn criticizing in this article. 1 consider him a good friend and an excellent showman. However, 1 believe hlm to be mistaken in matters that 1 arn about to discuss. Bowmanville High School's musical production this year is going to be Loesser's "Guys and Dolîs. " I would like to know why. Courtice High School put it on two or three years ago. With the present economic situation, why would anyone pay to see a repeat? That just isn't good business practice. Secondly, more than perhaps Mr. S. knows, some people who are auditioning for the show do not particularily want to do this particular show (this article was written before the show, was in the production stage). W hy didn't you go with "Little Mary Sunsine," the choice Sou started ýwith - it would ave been a change (a sâtirical musical on the Nel- son Eddy - Jeanette MacDon- ald movies)? Aside from that play, there are countless other mnusicals you could have done - why ris]k a potentially dangerous financial situation b1i-estaging a fairly recent More to the point, why does it always have to bce.a, musical? The "fifties" musi-- cals which you stage virtually w~aste two hours of a person's life - they have practîcally no social value; they waste the media that the stage bhas becorne. Equal amusement could bc obtaîned by watching ain Argo gamne. Mere enter- tainment is not enough any- more - stage productions should leave the audience better, more intelligent people. pot just imusically or comedically satisfied ones. The excuse of the people of Bowmanville flot comning out to see a non-musical is flot suffîcient. Crowd size is all a matter of publicity and. the time of production. Posters, ads, articles, and previews will all seli tickets. Keeping the production date out of the vicinity of other major local events will also ensure bigger audiences. Your reputation as tl4e finest show producer in this area wouldn't hurt either. As for the matter of involv- ing as many students in your production as possible, well, there's an answer to that too. You are staging two shows a year now - have a big musical extravaganza in the faîl and a smallhcast comedy in the spring In that way, you please pboth te majority of fun-loving chorus girls and the serious actors. That really is what it boils down to - there is a forgotten minority in B.H.S. - that of the unsinging actor. There are probably some excellent comedic and dramatic actors and actresses in the school who can't sing a note and hence, since thiey are denied anything other t han à mninor role, do not try out for'any of the, prejudiced musical pro- ductions which theyfuta tedly are nfred of year after year. If Richard Burton (who wouldn't know a B flat if it stepped on his foot) had gone to Bil.S., hie probably would have given up acting in despair when'he neyer got a chance to prove his potential. As head of the production guild at thehigh school Mr. Sheridan, I feel it is your duty to consider thîs article care- fully and act accordingly (no pun imtended). Board Studyf. Clarke Hig"h Buses A report from the Trans por- portion as is the regular practice. As the situation has been checked with the legal depart- ment of the OPP and due to the potential danger from speeding trucks in the Enter- prise Hill area, the driver on route 51 will be permitted to stop on the shoulder to pick up and dscharge pupils but must actuate the flashîng lights as normally practised.
