A great assortment of jobs such as painting, rak- ing leaves, cutting wood, shoveling manure, fencing, landscaping, construction, gardening, slaughtering chickens and washing cars were done. MOUTH GUARDS - Many young people playing minor sports, particularly hockey, are still wearing mouth and face guards that do not provide the best protection now available against dental injuries, according to a spokesman for the Ontario Dental Association. "The flexible plastic mouthguards generally being used by youngsters are sometimes ineffective because they can be knocked out of position during play, leaving the mouth totally unprotected. Recommended are rigid external mouthguards - similar to equipment worn by football players - which stay in their protective position during play, when properly attached to a snug-gitting helmet. Also recommended is the use of fitted internai mouthguards, like the ones boxers wear. Studies show the mouth to be the most commonly injured area of the body in minor sports. Injuries to - the teeth can cause permanent damages, therefore the ODA urge parents' work with local officials of minor leagues to ensure the best protection is being used. CANADA'S - Professional Ice Show, the "New Ice Generation" will be presented at the Civic Auditorium, Oshawa, with dates to be announ- ced. The show has been designed to bring first class entertainment to smaller arenas without saerificing quality. ONCE AGAIN - Sunday night hockey at the local arena was marred bv the sillv and stupid penalties. Both teams were at fault. Everyone admires a fighter, who stands up for his rights and beliefs, but this senseless show of fight, (with referees holding them back) slows the game. and there is nothing as exhilarating as a good, fast, clean game. Could be this is why crowd attendance is down? This game featured excel- lent play by the Toros defence- men who were standing up at the blue line making their checks and the wingers were coming back to pick up their checks and the Bowmanville passing game was quite impressive. Goaltender Richard Smith played very well to come up witb hiý second consecutive shutout un league play. Bob Beers Minor Atoms Lose Close One to Ajax On Sat., Oct. 25th, excellent play by Bob Beer Minor Atoms proved not quite good enougb, as their opponents, the Ajax team, nipped a win in the final minutes of the game. Glen Owens, playing his first game of the season with the Toros, displayed good checking especially during the first two periods. Darrin Knight also showed that he too, can play aggres- sive hockey as time and time again, he won control of the puck in the corners. Kelly Mathews played three periods of strong nockey and led the team into the final period with a 3-1 lead. With just 8 minutes to play, Ajax siormed back with 3 un- answered goals to wm the game 4-3. In this exhibi- tion game, Scott Masters scored the only local goal with bis usual bard work. Thus, it was a very somber, despondent group of fans who travelled to Cobourg for the Toros' second league game. It was quite apparent after the opening wbistle, that the spirit of tbis teai, mentioned in an earlier article, was not damp- ened by Sunday's loss. Hap- puy. theSyoungsters' desire was infectious for it was not long before the cheering section, led by Lil Smith, were chanting "GO BOWMAN- VILLE GO." In the first period, the Toros looked as if they would run away with the game. as time and time again they peppered the Cobourg goalie with shots, to no avail. Very improved and aggressive play was put on by Robert Giedhinger and DarrinRKnight during this period. The second period was also hard fought by both clubs and a few pla yers that should be mentioned for good play are Chuck Nash, Kelly Matbews and Jay Sweet. Also, Greg Smith put out his best effort ever, even tbough e was a little under the weather. The 3rd period was led by Scott Masters; it seems the longer they play the better he gets. The opposition should be thankful that the gamescon- sist of not more than tbree periods on this account. Equal comments could be said about Scott Heard as well. One player that impressed this scribe was Jon Rowe who was outstanding in net. It should be noted, at this time, that in league plày, thus far, Jon has shut out the Bay Ridges and Cobourg teams. Scoring for the Toros was Scott Masters from who else but Scott Heard (third period) and Kelly Mathews from Ra Cummings and Chris Michel- son also in the third period.
