10 The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanville, December 24, 1975 Research and Lung Diseases Researcti and sehlarship grants are an integral part of each year's Christmas Seat programn. Each Provincial Association including the Durham Region Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association devotes a p ortion of its Christmas Seal funds to the Canadian Tuber- culosis and Respiratory Dis- ease Association, your na- tional Christmas Seal organ- ization, for its national re- search and scholarship pro- gram. In addition, the TB and RD Association provides funds for researchi and also for medical education within the province. On the national scene there are 19 physicians învolved in 14 research programs across Canada, from Newfoundland to British Columbia, and fivei physicians on scholarship including one studying in the United States. The research areas Cover anatomy, physiology, path-1 ology, treatment, cause andi diagnosis. Approximately 501 ge r cent areconcerned with asic research in anatomy, physiology and physiopat h ology of the respiratory sy- stem in health and disease. For example a University of Manitoba project is investiga- ting the "Effect of Protein deficiency on Structure and Function of Lungs"; a Mc- Master progt-am is invoived in, "Studies of Partîcle Deéposi- tion and Clearance in Patients with Air-ways Obstruc tion" and at the, University of Toronto an investigation is being conducted ino "A Study of Pulmonary Extravascular, Water Volume in the Diag- nosis and Management of Acute and Chronic Respira- tory Disease." Occupational hazards are under investigation at the University of British Colum- bia with "Studies on Occupa- tional Asthma" while the University of Manitoba, is involved in "Investigations in Hypersensitivity Lung Dis- ease inFarmers." In addition, cer tain physicians are using aimal models necessary for research, prior to studies on patients. Research in lunR disease actually boils down to "why the patient couehs" " 1why hie has sputum' and "why is hie short of breath?" From the patients point of view diseases such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, acute and chronic respiratory failure, tuberculosis and other infect- iouis pulmonary diseases are being investigated for their benefit. The Canadian Thoracic So- ceity, mnedical arm of, the Canadian Tuberculosis and Respiratory Dsease Associa- tion is responsible for reviýew,ý- ing, assessing and determ-fin- ing wich research projects are to receive Christmas Seat Research dollars. Unhappily, maniy excellent projects must be discarded or urged to seek funds elsewhere because the àvaýilable dollars neyer ap proaceh, let alone meet, th demand for funds. The Canadian Thoracic So- ciety is endeavouring to en- courage an~d stimulate re- searchi in fields likely to prove of m ost benefit in understand- ing the development of var- ious respiratory diseases in order to develop prevention and treatment programs. .The Canadian Christmas Seal scholarship. program is designed to initiate or con- tinue to train physicians in lung diseases in specifiç centres in North America. These young doctors are specially trained in the in- vestigation and managment of various lung problems to ensure there will be sufficient respiratory specialists in Can- ada toi adequately serve the population in the future. Some may become involved even- tually in lung research pro- jects of theise-wn after their period of training has been I w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w- w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w Get togethe wth Price& Prideý forthHoias f k PAC OUNG CANADA GRADE -A"-EVISCERATED-FROZEN, VAC PAC, YOUNG A&P SL BASTING OR BUTTERBAL TURKEYS 20 LBS & up -lb 1010O 16-LBS AVG. 20 LBS &up 1010O 16-LBS AVG. li ~tim h orm ~nsP~&DiAà+éu*r~rpn CUT FROM CANADA GRADE "A" BEEF if we BONELESS BOTTOM CUT COOKED e ROUID STEAK ROASI ~1.S8SHANKPORTiNBUTT PORTION Round Steak Minced FRESH lb $13 enr Cuts or Hum Steaâks lb$1.68 Boneless Stewing Beef SHANK CUTS lb $128 HoleHms 14 TO 16-LBS A VERAGE [b$18 MAPLE LEAF-DINNER STYLE-BONELESS-VAC PAC, SCHNEIDERS, MAPLE LEAF OR SHOPSYS-YOUR CHOICE ~'Pork Shoulders b $1,7 inr .baPc9 4MAPLE LEAF OR SWIFT LAZY MAPLE-PORK MA9PLie lEA-ICED BLUE WATERc ~~a Sage Meat 1 lbr1178< Boloagna, 16-oz Vac Pac 9 ca ncs8ozpkg 73 TOWN CLUB IýL1E SCHNEIDERS-SLICEO7 VARIETIES SAU SEA-FROZEN SieBcnD1lbacPac sl58 Coe ets 6-oz Vac Pac 4 < krmn Cocktail pkg of 2, 4-,z jars98,' BURNS BRAND SCHPAEIOEf-R-8 VARIETIES ALPINE MRAD 2-LB PI<G K Grli Sasae l $1.09 Mii Dli hub 8pkg99< Bef Steakettes sl.35 I I I I z Kingbview United Church.
