The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 18, 1976 5 Fire Marshal's Office Intervenes in Dispute In Caesarea Fire TheOntario Fire, Marsha's office bas been calied on to settie a dispute between Caesarea's Fire Department Chief Leonard Scott and four wolnen who want to join the Hamlet's fire department. Scugog council recommend- ed that the clerk contact the Ontario Fire Marshal's office after a meeting last Monday attended by three of the four women. >The women wbo have been trying fo join Caesarea's volunteer fire brigade since, last August challenged Chief Scott at the meeting to defend and, give reasons for, his refusalto allow tbem to join. After Chief Scott gave is, view on tbe matter, he told council that be wouid with- draw his refusai -to aliow- the women to join the brigade if tbat was what council wanted. Scugog council had earlier hgreed to support the Chief's decision because be is given sole discretionary power for hiring staff under a township byiaw. Council then asked Clerk Doreen VanCamp to wr ite the Ontario office to receive their opinion in the matter. Chief Scott bas argued that the women would find tbe' equipment used by the fire brigade too heavy to bandie. A spokesman for the Ontario Fire Marshal's office said that two fire brigades in Ontario have women in the front lines of their brigades. The Cumberland Township Fire Department bas been, hiring -women for the past 112 Participate in Badminton Tournament Dept. years and currently has three women volunteers in their brigade, he said. Barry's Bay fire brigade aiso has one female volunteer. The womnan's father is the department's deputy chief and her husband is a volunteer also, the spokesman said.
