(This is the de- duction for 1,644 for one child instead of the usual $352 'or $646.) If you plan on using the $1,644 deduction for a child, and you have children both over and under 16, you may use the extra deduction for one of the younger children and take the $646 on the older children. This way you take full advantage of ahl available deductions. Alimony and maintenance payments have long been a problem with interpretation as to what is allowable and, what is not, but if you receive, such payments, you will probably have to include them in your income for the year. If you pay them, of coùrse, they 'will probably be deductible. Needless to say, if you are deducting for alîmony, you may not also dlaim exemp- tions, as one of the rules is that the children must be living with you. (Except, as explain- ect above, in the first year of the separation). What to do about recon- ciliations or re-marriages during the year, how to divide family allowances, what to do about child care expenses, and a variety of similar questions can be answered through two interesting (and free) pam- phlets, available from Rev- enue Canada by telephoning ZEO-4000. 1 One is entitled "Tl Income Tax Returns for Deceased were visiting with relatives while there.
