4The Canadian Statesman, Bo0wmanvîîll(, Orcfi 31, 19763 TxCorner by John Manuel, C.G.A. Ontario Tax Credits The 1975 credits, consisting of the Property Tax Credit, Sales Tax Credit, Pensioner Tax Credit and Political Contribution Tax Credit are administered by Ontario, but it is stili necessary to file the purpie form together with a complete tax return to- Otta- wa. The first three credits are similar to past years; the political credit is new for 1975. As most taxfilers are used to the credits, only a few of the finer points will be covered here. Property Tax Credits Based on taxes paid hy n homeowner or rent by a tenant, there is generally only one credil pù- family, to be taken by the member with the highest taxable incomie. But in the case of a student between 16 and 20 years cf age who lives away from! home tem- porarily to attend university, the student may dlaim this credit even tbough he has no taxable income and is claimed as a dependant. It would be based on rent paid while away from home. Students living in "prescribed" student resi- dences are limited to an occupancy cost for that period of $25. People who share accom- modation and who are not married may share the rent or taxes between them and both dlaim the basic $180 credit. This would apply to any sharing arrangement in- cluding a common-law mar- niage. Separated or divorced couples may also dlaim sep- arate credits, sharing the tax or rent before separation and each claiming the rent or tax paid after separation. Sales Tax Credits Any person 16 years or older may file for this dlaim unless he or she is claimed as a dependant by somebody else. Where a person has no taxable income and does not dlaim a child as a dependant, it may be advantageous to have the child (if he is 16 or over) file for bis own credif. Pensioner Tax Credit This credit applies to any person who is 65 years of age or older, or to a married couple one of whom is 65 or over. If both are 65 or over and both have income, only the one with the higher taxable in- come may dlaim the credit. In the case of a death durîng the year, both husband'and wife may dlaim the full credit if both were 65 or over during the year. Political Contribution Tax Credit This is the only credit which requires that receipts be turned in with thereturn. Il applies only to contributions made to Ontari6 parties. (Federal contributions follow the same formula, but are claimed un page 1 of the return against federal tax only.) t is also the only credit that does not apply if no provincial tax is payable. The other three credits can resuit in a refund. This one can, be used to reduce the provincial tax payable, but if, after deducting the other three credits, the remainîng provin- cial fax is iess than the allowable political deduction or is nil, you could lose ail or a part of the deduction. A person with less than $1,400 of taxable income will certainly lose any possible benefit from this deduction, as no tax would be payable. Taxable Incomne After computing the first three credits, the total of them is reduced by 2 per cent of taxable income. But if taxable income is $1,395 or less, it is considered to be nil, and the credits are taken in full. ..oàrn -a nd educated in Dar- lington Township, she was the daughter of the late Simon and Acy (Rundle) Penfound. ,i 1923 she was united in mar- niage to the late Melville H.
