Mary, Brown's Novices Ousted from Ont. Finals By Hot Bay Ridges Team The Bowmanville Mary Brown's Novice Toros were eliminated from the O.M.H.A. Championship finals in three straight games by a high-fly- ing Bay Ridges squad in games played last week. The first game of the series was played in Don Beer Arena last Monday evening with the Bay Ridges squad posting a very convincing 5-1 victory. The first period ended in a 1-1 draw with the Toros' Jon Clieff picking up Bowman- ville's lone tally, assisted by defenceman Brian Heard. The second game was play- ed in Darlington Sports Centre on Tuesday, March 3Oth and again, Bay Ridges were the winners, this time by a close 2-1 count. The Toros' captain Chris Dreossi opened the game's scoring assisted by his Winger Jon Clieff. This goal stood up until the third period when Bay Ridges scored two goals in less than a minute for their margin of victory. Rich- ard Smith was in net for Bowmanville and played ex- ceptionally well. The third game again, was, 2-1 for the "Bay", played in Darlington on Friday evening. The Bay Ridges squad opened the scoring only 23 seconds after the game started. Dre- ossi tied the score in the second period on an unassist- ed tally. Late in the middle period, the vîsitors scorect the game winner tg capture the Lakeshore League Champion- ship in three straight games. Chris Clifton was in goal for the Toros and again played extremely well. The Toros' have been without the services of defenceman Lorne Whit- marsh and his great speed and shot were sorely missed from the blueline. Tracy Stephens, who was brought up from the Recreation Éeague, has play- ed extremely well 'on defence and will certainly be a great asset to thîs club the remain- der of the season. The Bowmanville squad had atough playoff series with Markham, and Stouffville while Bay Ridges were squaring off with Pickering and Cobourg and quickly disposed of these two teams. They have been preparing for the Bowmanville team for over a week while the Toros were battling it out with a very tough Stouffville club. The Bowmanville lads were obviously tired while the Bay Ridges players were "up" for the final. They played beauti- fully and were full value for their victory. The Toros started off slowly and it appeared as if they were continuing their pattern of the final playoff round with Bay Ridges and were not passing the puck with their usual effectiveness and were not checking with any authority. At the midway point of this game, the pieces seemed to faîl into place and with two goals from Chris Dreossi, one each from Brent Nell and Tom McLaughlin, they ad- vanced into the Championship round of the ltournament. Goaltender Richard Smith of the Torus was chosen as The Most Valuable Player of this game and was gîven a trophy to take home. The second game of the day was against a team from Picton, with the Toros picking up a win with a score of 4-0. Brian Grabko led the scoring as well as Dreossi wîth both boys picking up a pair of goals. Chris Clifton played in goal for Bowmanvilie and pickêd up the ony shutout in the entire tournament, a shlitout richly deserved as he Recreation News Pee Wee A Playoffs: March 29th - Rice Bowl - 2 Jeff Canfield, John Dillon, shut out to John Stacey; Metro Nation- als -0. At the midway p)oint in the game, the two teams were fairly even, with Bowm'anville nursing a 2-1 lead. The Toros' larger size and passing abîity finally wore down the northern lads, and the Bowmanville squad peppered the Lakefield net- minder with many blistering shots. The scoring was looked after by Brian Heard with two, Greg Watson, who turned in one of his best performances in, several, weeks with two, Chris Dreossi with one, Jon Clieff one and Jeff Dawson one goal. This win was particular- ly satisfying as it was a real team effort with ail the goals coming as a result of some slick passing -and positional play, something that had been lacking in the Toros' attack in' recent weeks. Goaltender Richard Smith was again chosen as the Most Valuable Player as well as the Top Goaltender in "A" Divi- sion in the tournament. Each Bowmanville player received a crest as well as an Olympie style medallion in recognition of the Championship. Team Captain Chris Dreossi was presented with the beautiful trophy to complete a very satisfying day's activities for the team. Next weekend the Mary Brown's Novices travel to Orillia to take part in the two-day Invitational Novice Tournament, playing their first game Saturday morning at 9:00. In six tournamfents this year, the Novices have won four Championships and one Consolation Champion- ship.
