41 Thp ('Anadian Statesian, Bowrnanwville, May j,2, 19i6 YELVERTON Following a couple of un- eventful weeks newswige, activity following our, brief hibernation during the second (or is il the third) winter has again been motivated. On Thurs. afternooh Yelver- ton U.C.W. met for their May meeting at the home of Mr. and- Mrs. Clarence Page. President, Mrs. Murray Mal- colm, chaired the meeting fromn a supine position after two months absence. Joyce has been laid up for a long time with a double fracture of her leg but is finally on the mend. Business included final- ization of plans for the June Garden Party and discussion on the disposition of the quilt the ladies have been working on for the past 3 months. It was decided to raffle it off at the December meeting if the moths haven't eaten il by then. The program which consisted of a travelogue with sldes presented by a lady from Rosedale of a trip up (or was it down) the Amazon River Valley was very inter- esting, we were told. On Sat. evenini a very successful dance was held in Pontypool sponsored by our Men's Softball Team. The hall was filled to capacity to enjoy the music supplied by the Claremont Country Carrollers or somne such thîng. This is a new group recently formed which includes Yelverton's own Ian Page and was_ well received by the crowd pre- sent. We expect, to see and hear much more from these lads. Mrs. Trevor Nesbitt of Nestleton and a gentleman from Newcastle area won the two draws. The lads are to be commended for a well ar- ranged evening with everyone participating in the planning and work. Next Sunday, May 16, the Lake Scugog Softball schedule officially opens with Nestleton at Velverton. Special thanks from the team to Pontypool's goodwill Am- bassador "Barrister" Clifford and Yvonne Fallis who were most co-operative with the hall arrangements etc. Also on Sat. evening the Past-Wardens Association held their annual meeting and banquet at Welcome with a goodly attendance of 31 mem- bers and wives present. Fol- lowing a delicious roast beef meal the election of officers took place as follows. Past President - Harvey Malcolm, Pres. - Gerald (Jerry) Philips, Vice-Pres. - Merrili VanCamp, Sect.-Treas. - Douglas Mc- Master. Mr. Roy Foster re- linquished the post of Sect.- Treas. which he had held Se capably the past five years. Mr. Cecil Carvith, our earliest Warden present (1945), made a few impromptu comments of the changes over the years. Mr. Alex Carruthers, retired M.PP., was honoured by the group by being named an "Associate Member" of the organization 'with full privi- leges (including 'paying an annual membership fee). It was our pleasure to present the current Northumberland Warden, Mr. Mike Vasburg, with a complimentary mem- bership for 1976-77. The group has embarked on a tree planting beautification pro- gram for the Golden Plow Lodge in Cobourg. Earlier this week several members plant- ed a few shade trees la phase one of the program. A pretty wedding was solemnized at Yelverton United Church on Sat., May lst when Miss Adrienne Bot- tomley,. eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bottomley and were united in marriage by Mr. Ted Powers. Adrienne was the recipient of a mis- cellaneous shower a week or so prior to the wedding. Congratulations are proferred, Mrs. Audrie Brown enter- tained Mr. and Mrs. Paul Pickett and family, Mr. and Mrs. Pickett Sr. (Paul's parents) and Mr. and Mrs. Murray Irons and family, all of Toronto, on Sat. Master Danny Stînson entertained a number of his friends on Sat. on the occasion of his eleventh birthday. Mrs. Hank Boon Sr. spent this week with her daughter and family, the Harvey Mal- colms.
