Agricutural Representative 1976 Inter-County 4-H Champ- Ship Show The 1976 Inter-County 4-H Championship Show was held on Thursday September 23rd, the Lindsay Exhibition Grounds in Lindsay. Over 200 young 4-Hers from Ontario, Durham Victoria, Peterbor- ough and Northumberland Counties took part in this excellent livestock show. 4-H members exhibiting dairy or beef calves who have won individual classes in their own counties were eligible to take part in this show. Mr. Brian McCague of Alliston was judge for the dairy program while Mr. Doug McDonnell from the Toronto stock yards was the judge in the beef section. Durham county was repre- sented by 21 young 4-Hers from the Durham Dairy Club, the Durham Beef Club and the Hope Calf Club. These young people did an excellent job in the various classes and their animals and the members acquitted themselves quite well in the various classes. In the Junior Holstein Hefer class, Valerie Van Camp of Blackstock was 3rd in the first prize group while Norman DeJong, Faye Jose, Brenda Ferguson, Herbert Roemer and Cynthia Budd all placed in the 2nd prize group and Walt Vice placed in the 3rd prize group. In the Senior Holstein Calf Class all three of Durham's representatives placed in the 1st prize group with Cindy Van Camp placing 3rd, John De- Vries placing 5th and Barry Van Camp placing 7th. This outstanding group of three senior Holstein Hefers also won the award for the top group of the senior dairy calves in the overall dairy show, with an excellent group of three calves exhibited by the three members. The other dairy breeds class for senior calves: Craig Larmer, Doug Larmer and Paul Larmer, all of Blackstock placed in the 2nd prize group. There were over 140 entries in the dairy calf section. In . dairy showmanship, Durham County once again did very well with John DeVries of Bowmanville tak- ing the dairy showmanship competiton over 14 other competitors from the sur- rounding counties. Cynthia Budd of Port Hope placed 5th while Barry Van Camp of Blackstock was in the 2nd prize group. In the Beef section Durham also did quite well In the Junior Beef Hefer class, Paul Hurst of Orono was in the lst prize group, Andy Svetec of Enniskillen was in the 2nd prize group and Wayne Yel- lowlee of Enniskillen was in the 3rd prize group. In the Senior Beef Hefer Class, Gary Smith of Enniskil- len was 2nd in the overall class and Scott Bennet of Enniskil- len was 5th. In the Beef Steer class, Mary Cornish of Tyrone was in the 1st prize group while Jim Smith of Enniskil- len was in the 2nd prize group and Wendy Cornish of Tyrone was in the 3rd prize group. In the Beef showmanship com- petition which was a very keenly sought after award, Gary Smith of Enniskillen placed 2nd while Jim Smith was 4th and Wendy Cornish placed in the 2nd prize group. Our congratulations go out to all of these young 4-Hers for the excellent job that they did do at Lindsay in representing their clubs. In addition to the livestock show there were 4-H club exhibits prizes awarded, Durham County had three club exhibits take part in this competition. The exhibits from the Durham landscape gardening club, and the 4-H Junior Dairy Club placed in the 1st prize group while the exhibit from the Durham 4-H field crops club placed in the 2nd prize group. Ontario Sheep Seminar Once again this year a two day program sponsored by the Ontario Sheep association, The University of Guelph from the Ontario Ministry of Agri- culture and Food will take place on October 29th and 30th at the Arboretum Centre at the University of Guelph. The objective of this seminar is to offer the latest information on sheep production both from a scientific and practical stand- point. The program offers unique opportunity for sheep owners to discuss matters of importance to the sheep industry among each other and with other knowledgeable people. All Sheep owners in Ontario are invited to attend the two day pro ram. The first day October 29t§ will be entit- led production day with a visit to a local commercial farm producing white lambs and also viewing the use of corn foilage as a feeding program. While on Saturday a workshop program will be held dealing with such topics as feeding, breeding, and health. Sheep producers in the area wishing further information on this program may get in touch with the Agricultural Office and we would remind pro- ducers that if you are planning on attending, the registration deadline for this seminar is October 22nd. In addition Motel and Hotel accomoda- tions if you are planning on staying for the two days are available in the Guelph area. Crop Insurance For Winter Wheat Just a brief reminder to the growers of winter wheat that if you are planning on taking out crop insurance on your winter wheat crop this year, the deadline for applications is October 20th. Growers should get in touch with the local crop insurance agent in the county who are Bruce Taylor of R.R. 1 Enniskillen. Phone 263-2741 or Bev Gray at Garden Hill Phone 797-2206. These two people have the necessary application forms and all other information about crop insurance for winter wheat so we urge you to get in touch with them before October 20th if you wish to insure your crop. Northern Ontario Feeder Calf Sales We mentioned in one of our earlier news columns about the upcoming Northern Ontar- io Feeder Cattle Sales which take place annually during this time of year. The second of these sales for 1976 was held at Wiarton on Thursday Sept- ember 23rd. Over 3200 head of cattle were sold to a good number of buyers with the top price being $43.00 per hundred for a group of Hereford Simmental cross steer calves. Prices generally at the sales have been quite a bit stronger than they were in 1975 especially on calves that are just coming off grass from this summer. Upcoming sales of interest to producers in the area include sale at South River on October Bth where 1200 head of cattle would be offered another sale at Wiar- ton on October 14th where 3000 head would be on the auction block, a sale in the Eastern Ontario Region at Galetta on October 18th with 1000 head being offered and also October 18th at Rainy River where 2600 head of Feeder Cattle will be auctioned. There will also be a feeder cattle sale at La Sarre on October 19th and another sale at South River on October 21st. Producers and feedlot operators in the area who are looking for good quality cattle should keep these sales dates in mind. Upcoming Holstein Events Just a reminder again to Holstein breeders in the area of the two outstanding pro- grams upcoming in October. On October 12th the second Kawartha classic consign-. ment sale will be held at the judging Coliseum at the Peter- borough exhibition grounds starting at 7:30 p.m. Sale Manager and Auctioneer Mr. Lloyd Wilson of Uxbridge has along with his staff been able to assemble an excellent group of live stock to be put through this consignment sale. The following day on October 13th, the 35th annual East Central Ontario Holstein Championship show will be held in the memorial centre in Peterborough starting at 9:30 a .m. Judge for this excellent champsionship show will be Mr. Henry (Sonay) Bartel of Ellsworth, Wisconsin. Mr. Bartel is recogaized as one of the outstanding Holstein judges in North America and Holstein breeders would be interested in observing his techniques and placiags. Womens Institute DURHAM WEST DISTRICT INSTITUTE The Executive and Board of Directors of Durham West District Women's Institute met at the home of the President Mrs. Marguerite Fraser on Sept. 28th. The purpose of the meeting was to plan our fall activities. Mrs. Fraser opened the meeting with a Welcome and all repeated the Collect - Mrs. Wm. Ashton, secretary read the minutes and any corres- pondence. It is planned to begin using talent money given each branch and in various ways to make it increase. This is to help for the extra expenses we will have in our Area's 75th Anniversary in 1977 Let us al co-operate with the ideas our branch pro- motes. Again this fall we plan a Fun Fair. This year it will be held at Nestleton on Tuesday, October 26th at 2 p.m. The afternoon will be of interest to all. Program numbers of a humorous nature, will be given by Blackstock, Kendal, Maple Grove and Solina branches. Crafts from each branch will be displayed. There will be a sale of articles with each branch donating. Tea and cookies will be served to all. Each member is requested to wear their name tag. Mark this date on your October calendar - Everyone welcome tô bring a friend.
