Paciym n e nts Increases in the Old Age Security pension, Guaranteed Income Supplement and Spouse's Allowance, effective January, 1977, were an- nounced today by Health and Welf are Minister Marc La- londe. Increases in Old Age Secur- ity pension and Guaranteed Income Supplement payments represent the tbirteenth quar- terly escalation based on the cost of living, as provided for in the Old Age Security Act. The new montbly total at the single rate for persons receiv- ing botb the basic Old Age Security pension and maxi- mum Guaranteed Income Supplement will be $240.47. For a married couple. both pensioners, the combination of the basic pension and maxi- mum supplement will provide a payment of $458.74 for the couple monthly. The basic Old Age Security pension will rise in January to $141.34 from the present $139.39. The Guaranteed Income Supplement is paid to pension- ers wbose income, apart from the Old Age Security pension, is limited. Tbe amount of tbe supplement varies in relation to the amount of income. Tbe maximum Guaranteed Income Supplement for a single person, or a married person whose spouse is not a pensioner and is not receiving a Spouse's Allowance, will go up in January to $99.13 from its current $97-76. The maxi- mum supplement for a mar- ried couple, botb pensioners, will increase to $88.03 eacb from $86.81. Added to the basic pension, thîs will give eacb married pensioner $229.37 montbly, or a total of $458.74 for the couple. Tbe Spouse's Allowance is paid to persons between 60 and 65 years of age who are married to Old-Age Security pensioners and meet resi- dence requirements. Entitie- ment to a Spouse's Allowance, and amount paid, is based on yearly income. Tbe maximum Spouse's AI- lowance will increase to $229.37 from $226.20. The maximum Spouse's Allow- ance is made up of an amount equivalent to the basic Old Age Security pension and the maximum Guaranteed In- come Supplement at the married rate. Bowm anville Two Beauties And One Beast This friendly gorilla was one of the visitors who happened to drop in on the annual Courtice Secondary School Christmas dance last Thursday evening. He was just in time to meet 14-year-old Andrea Kofalvi, the new Snow Princess at the Courtice school and Pattie Leonard, who was last year's princess. Andrea Kofalvi is on the lef t of the photograph and Patti Leonard is on the right. As for the monkey in the middle, he was on hand to publicize the movie King Kon g, which startedplaying in Oshawa last week. Rumor has it that the person inside the ape suit is a Courtice Secondary student named Lenny Chappeil who also plays goal for the Marina Junior Cs. KNDmn'AL Kendal U.C.W. met on Wednesday for their Christ- mas meeting and a pot luck dînner in the home of Mrs. Keitb Wood. Following a bounteous dinner tbe meeting was opened by Mrs. Margar- etta Stevens acting president in the absence of Mrs. Stapleton. Mrs. Catbcar -t read' the minutes of the November meeting, the financial report on the bazaar showed over $500 was taken in. Tbe birthday money was turned in for the year. Money pledges were moved toward, the United Church, tbe Manse Expenses, The Bible Society and Oxfam. The program consisted of Carol singing, a solo by Mrs. Tizzard, a duet by Mrs. E. Foster and Mrs. Tizzard, each member giving a short reading or showing something they have made sucb as an apron, bell cor- sages and a beautiful hand quilted quilt. Since the nomin- ating committee failed to come up with a new president for the coming year, the last four past presidents are to take turns on a rotating basis as president. It bas' been suggested each take a three month term, in alphebetical order. Tbere was an exehange of gif ts, the meeting concluded by repeating the Mizpah Benediction. There was a draw for a Christmas cake at Kendal school on Thursday. Miss Susan Thompson, stu- dent teacher for two weeks, made the draw. The holder of the lucky draw was Mrs. R. Lambier. Mr. and Mrs. R. Elliott were at a birthday dinner party Tuesday evening held by Mrs. J. Thompson of Millbrook. Mr. and Mrs. G. Cathcart and Arthur Thompson spent last Thursday afternoon with their aunt Mrs. L. Burwash of Cobourg. The W.l. Christmas meeting and pot luck dinner was held Friday in the home of Mrs. Eleanor Foster with twelve members and three guests present. For the second time in the week the ladies enjoyed a bounteous dinner followed by a program and the ex- change of Christmas gifts. Prizes were gîven to the youngest member, the oldest member, the one with the nearest birthday. Plans were made to pack boxes for the shut-ins, the following Thurs- day. Friday evening the Orange- rnen's Card party was very tvell attended. The prizes were, as follows. High lady-Cathy Switzer, Iow lady-Terry Mof- fatt, gent's high went to Gieorge Elgear and gent's low .0 Charlie' Waye. The 50-50 draw was won by Mabel Elliott. Mrs. Grace Manders invited the ladies of the Women's Institute to ber place last Thursday to see ber plants growing under the lights in heir heated basement. For those who were unable to go, bhey missed a great display of lozens and dozens of varieties bhriving beautifully. It is well vorth seeing and a good place to purchase a Christmas gîftt for a friend. Miss Catherine Stewart and Mrs. Edna Dobson attended a ft Christmas diýxner party held by Mr. and Mrs. George Loftbouse Saturday evening at the Flying Dutcbman in, Bow- manville. They also cele- brated Mrs. Lofthouse's birtb- day. Around thirty guests attended. The Sunday Sehool annual Christmas concert wýaý held Saturday eveninig in Kendal Cburch. Rev. A. Tizzard was Master of Ceremonies for the evening. It was a fine programn witb numnbers from each of the classes and the Sunday School teachers. A solo by Mr. Mark Wagar with bis mandolin also by Terry Moffatt with b er guitar was much enjoyed, besides many chorus' by the children and singing of carols by everyone. At the closing, jolly old Santa Claus arrived to band out gifts and bags of goodies fromn under a beauti- fully decorated tree. Much credit is due to the Sunday School teacbers, Mrs. K. Wood at the piano and Mrs. A. Foster at the organ for a fine evening of entertainment., Rev. and Mrs. Norman McKenzie of Toronto were at their cottage over the week- end and attended churcb in Kendal Sunday morning. Mr. and Mrs. John McMil- Ian of Tbornhill were at their cottage on the weekend. Mrs. ME. Foster Sr., whoý bas been visiting ber daughter Mrs. Walsh in Vittoria cele- brated ber 9th birtbday on Sunday in the Lion's Centre in Vittoria. There was a dinner for the family, at noon and a reception from 2:30 -4:00 p.m. Those from this area wbo attended were Mr. and Mrs. Allen Foster, Mrs. Marlatt, Mr. and Mrs. Ralpb Kennedy, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Foster and sons Reid and Roy, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Foster, Mr. and Mrs. Brian Foster, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Foster, Glen Foster, Mrs. W.H. Foster, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Byers of Welcomne, Mr. and Mrs. Ned Foster of Port Hope. There were about 100 present for the event. Mrs W.H. Foster remained Robberyà, Thwaâ-rted Newcastle OPP charged two Oshawa youths recently after an alleged attempted robbery in an Oshawa Taxi cab. The incident took place north of Newcastle Village around 3:45 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11. Newcastle OPP report.that a driver with an Oshawa taxi firm was struck in the back of the bead witb a carpenter's bammer wbîle driving two youtbs to a destination in Clarke towbsbip. The driver, Ron Heffernan of Oshawa, was able to ward off b is attackers who fled without taking any money. Two suspects were arrested about 6 arn. at a service station on bighway 135. Mr. Moffatt asked t0 j0ifl the committee last month. Council agreed to let the 1977 council decide whether Mr. Moffatt should join the committee. The Hydro liaison commit- tee is made up of both elected officials and civil 'servants from the town and the Durham Reizion. The committee was set up to deal with the proposed nucIear generating plant at Darling- ton. Senior Citizens Two Bowmanville senior citizens wbo appeared before councîl last week asked that the town consider providing more space for senior citizens' recreation. George Heath, a Bowman- ville resident, said rooms are needed for women 10 do crochet work and basket work while men would like more space 10 play snooker. Leonard Venning,. another senior citizen fromn Bowman- vill suggested the Bowman- ville library would be a good place for recreational facili- lies for the seniors.'
