Cummings Major Bantams Lose 3-2 to Kitchener in Final Game of Tournament The Cummings Major Ban- tams journeyed to Aurora last weekend and lost the final game 3-2 to the Kitchener AAA club. It was a fast skating, hard hitting game that the Toros lost when Kitchener scored with only 1:47 to go in the game. The Toros came back twice from a one goal deficit and were carrying the play to Kitchener in the 3rd period. The Cummings crew first goal was a result of excellent forechecking while killing a penalty. Pete Keene passed the puck in front of the net and Randy MacDonald rapped it home. Toros second goal was a result of hard work. Rob DeBoo knocked the puck to Rick Simpson and with two defencemen ail over him, he managed to score Simpson had an excellent tournament, he was twice selected most valuable player of the game and he was also selected most valuable player of the tourna- ment. Chuck Welsh also earned a most valuable player of the game when he scored an overtime goal in the first game. The Toros beat New- market, Friday night, 4-3, when Brent Clemens poked checked a Newmarket de- fenceman and Welsh moved in to score a picture goal. The Toros had taken a 3-1 lead but lost it in the third. MacDonald scored the first goal when the deflected Terry Riggers' point shot.. Neil Jones also received an aýsist on the goal. Rob DeBoo scored the second goal when he was set up by Stan Greenham and Simpson. De- Boo scored the third goal when he was set up by Riggers and Carl Chambers. On Saturday the Cummings crew record a well earned 2-0 victory over Brantford AAA team. It was a hard hitting, close checking affair with Toros John Storgaard playing excellent in the net. MacDon- aid scored the winning goal in the second period, with an assist to Simpson. Simpson then got the insurance marker when he was set up by Brent Clemens and Greenham. On Sunday morning the Cummings crew defeating Pointe Claire, a Quebec team, by the score of 1-0. John Storgaard again performed well between the pipes. It was a close checking, bard hitting game. The Toros only goal came late in the second period when Riggers blasted a hard point past the Pointe Claire goal. The only assist on the goal went to Simpson. The Cummings crew played excellent hockey in the Aurora tournament and proudly re- presented Bowmanville. - The Toros were only one of two teams in this tournament that were A teams. The rest of the teams were AA or AAA. The boys are to be proud of the hockey and manners they displayed in the tournament. On Wed., January 5, the Toros travelled to Osbawa and recorded a 8-3 victory in league play. It was a fast skating and crisp passing game with the Toros in control. The scoring spree was led by Clemens one goal, three assists and Steve Braun two goals and an assist. Also contributing to the scoring was MacDonald one goal, DeBoo one goal - one assist, Welsh one goal two assists, Simpson one goal one assist, Greenham one goal, Jones one assist, Riggers two assists, Chambers two assists. On Sunday, the Bowman- ville Minor Atoms paid their first visit of the season to Markham and defeated the Millionaires by the close score of 2-1 in a somewhat sluggish effort by the Toros. The score remained dead- locked until Greg Watson scored an unassisted goal with just 4:25 remaining, to pick Up the victory. Allan Ulrich and Richard Smith shared the goaltending duties and both lads were extremely sharp, nullifying several Markham attacks. Bowmanville's next League game is this coming Sunday when they make their first visit of the season to Whitby- Brooklin. Out St. MarysCere For Tournament With four regulars missing from their line-up, Bowman- ville St. Marys Cement Juve- niles won their first two games before bowing out to Hamilton in the championship game. In their first game which was played at 8:30 a.m., Clarkson scored the only goal of the first period. By the second period, the Bowman- ville boys woke up and scored three unanswered goals to win the game. The third period went scoreless. "Duke"' Brunt from Steve Hogarth tied the game at one. Brunt scored the winner, three minutes later from Ralph Cryderman and Ed Gruyters. The insurance marker was scored by Rick Cross set up by Gerry Leddy and Rick Scott. Ron Clapdorp made excellent saves late in the game to preserve the win. Bowmanville's second game was played before a very large crowd as they were playing the host Picton club -who earlier defeated Cobourg. This game turned out to be a very exciting contest with Bowmanville holding on for a 3-2 victory. Picton opened the scoring in the first period. Bowmanville scored once in the second period to tie the game. In the third, Bowman- ville scored twice then Picton scored their final goal near the end of the game. Bowman- ville's first goal was an unassisted effort by Rick Cross. Rick shot the puck from outside the blueline and the puck took a funny bounce and eluded the Picton goalie. Cryderman put Bowmanville ahead with Brunt assisting. A few seconds later Brunt scor- ed from Cryderman. Dan Wilcox playing in goal was instrumental in the victory. Because Deseronto did not show, Hamilton played only one game prior to the Cham- pionship game. Their first game was a 8 - 3 victory over Whitby. The final game was close throughout. Delta Faucet Midgets Showing Great Form in Their Recent Contests The Delta Faucet Midgets closed the year on a winning note and thus far have had a successful new year. On Monday, December 27, 1976, they hosted Pickering at the Hampton Arena. The Toros had an easy time coasting to an 8-2 victory. Centre Kevin Ward had an excellent game scoring a hat-trick. Kevin needs no invitation when there is a loose puck near the opposition's net. Other scores went to Mike Foster, Paul Fice, Tom Fowler, Paul Sero and Brian Dennis. The following Monday, Jan- uary 3, 1977, the Torôs entertained an Oshawa Mid- __get team, the Central Lions. The Oshawa team skated well throughout thegane but were plagued by poor goaltending in the opening minutes. By the time the game was seven minutes old the Toros had popped four goals. Paul Fice contributed two while Marc Bissonette and Kevin Ward scored one apiece. The Osh- awa goaltender then settled down and his teammates played strongly in front of him. They blanked the Toros for the remainder of the game, scored once in the second period and three times in the third period to tie Bowman- ville 4-4. On Saturday, January 8, 1977, Uxbridge were the visi- tors at Hampton Arena. The game was tightly contested by both teams. The aggressive play kept the timekeeper busy in the penalty box but provid- ed excitement for the specta- tors. The Toro defensive corps came up with a strong effort. They were physical with the Uxbridge attackers in their own end and were repeatedly instrumental in carrying the attack back to the opposition. -The Toro forwards distin- guished themselves with a lot of hustle and hard work. Their constant harassment led to many opportunities in the Uxbridge end. Brian Dennis was very effective scoring twice. Jim Broschak did not see action in the first two periods but notched two goals in the third. Wayne Whiteman and Mark Luxton scored singles in the 6-2 victory. Goaltender Mark Shackelton was outstanding and was preserving,a shutout into the last minute. A couple of errors in the Toro end enabled Uxbridge to make the score sheet. The next morning, Sunday, January 9, 1977, the Toro team hosted the Newcastle Major Midgets at the Hampton Arena. The game featured fast skating and good hard work by both teams, The Toros continued their form from the previous night against Uxbridge. Wayne Whiteman scored in the first period and Marc Bissonette likewise in the second. How- ever, by the third period the pace was telling on the Toros and for the most part the play was confined to Bowman- ville's end. Equal to the task was goaltender Paul Lavigne. Newcastle did score once but Paul's- work in the net preserved the Toro victory. D & R Sports Minor Atoms Win Twie-ondleseOnee The Bowmanville D&R Sports Minor Atom Toros had a busy week, playing three league games, winning two and losing one. On Tuesday evening, Jan. 4th, the Toros travelled to Cobourg and defeated the host club to the tune of 6-2. There was only one goal scored in the opening period, this being picked up by Chris Dreossi with the assist going to Brett Blundell. The middle period also featured just one goal, again scored by Bowmanville's Greg Watson assisted by defenceman Glen Duncan. In the final stanza, Cobourg got on the scoresheet to close the Toros' margih to just a single goal. At the 5:18 mark, the Toros' captain defence- man Lorne Whitmarsh scored a beautiful goal after being sent in by his defence partner Duncan. Tom McLaughlin picked up another Bowman- ville goal, this one unassisted. Dreossi picked up his second of the game, assisted by his left winger Brent NeIll. The Cobourg squad scored their final goal at the 2:57 mark. The final goal of the contest was registered by Jeff Daw- son, unassisted. Richard Smith was in the net for Bowmanville and made sever- a key saves to earn the victory. On Saturday, January 8th, Ajax paid their second visit of the season to Memorial Arena and handed the D&R Sports team their second loss of the year, a 2-1 squeaker. The visitors scored two goals in the middle frame after the opening period had featured many glorious scor- ing opportunities at both ends of the rink. At the 4:03 mark of the third period, Bowmanville's Greg Watson scored an unassisted goal to narrow the 'margin. The Toros pulled their goalie for the extra attacker but were unable to dent the twine for the equalizer. This Ajax club played a very tight checking game and thwarted every Toro attack with their patented style of extremely aggressive checking, thor- oughly frustrating the Bow- manville squad. Both Toro defeats have been at the hands of this same Ajax club. Allan Ulrich was in goal for the D&R Sports team and made many key saves to keep the score from going even higher.
