8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 2, 1977 Section Two MaCIry 1BroVwn'1S No0%vic qz-*es Wiîn Ov e r Black Hawks 2-1 >The Mary Brown's Novice Alîstars officially opened Young Canada Day at the Bowmanville Arena on Satur- day Jan. 22nd. They competed in this tournament against Oshawa Black Hawks of the L.N.H.L. league and won 2 to 1. After the officiai cere- monies were completed, the Toros faced off in high gear and connected their first goal at the 2:08 mark. Mark Hickey cornered his man deep in the opponents' end and was able to spot Paul Herron standing on the left Jiand corner of the net unmolested and as quickly as hie received the pass from Hickey it was in the net to giv(ý the Toros a 1-0 lead. The Hawks and Toros con- tinuted to play outstanding hockey through the remaining first and second periods. It was only in the second period when, the Toros feit they could case up a little as Paul Herron scored what proved to be the winning goal. The goal was credited to team work ail the way as Mike Knight started a tremendous rush from inside the Toros nwn end ail the way inside the Hawks end where Mike rifled a bard pass to the op posite side to Mark fl-ickey. Hickey then put the puck right on to Paul Herron's stick while two Hawks clung to hlm but to no avail could they knock Herron down as he fired a hard backhander straight into the net. The second period ended 2-0 Toros but the Hawks came swooping in fast and hard as they got right back into the game wth a goal at the 1:35 mark of the final period. The Toros defensive (only 3) were caught numerous times leaving their net unprotected, or maybe they were tired or anxious to get the man and clear the puck up and out of the Toros end. Once the defensives got a rest for a shift or two the . club became defensive minded again and proved to almost 300 specta- tors that a winning team is a defensîve hockey team. The final sore was 2-1 for Mary Brown's Toros over Oshawa Black Hawks and the Most Valuable Player for the Toros was awarded to Mark ickey. Congratulations go out to- the entire team as they all played excellent two way hockey and this was certainly, a diffîcult decision for anyone to pick any one star. - - FoTh i Rht Pinti ToD h Ri, t jo Louve Ut Her ~-1vw-v Delta Faucet Midgets Win TwoLeague Game$ Lose an Exhibition The past two weeks has seen the Delta Faucet Midgets win two league games and drop an exhibition match.
