PilgrimsReturning to Mosport for Repeat of Strawberry Field, Festival? Re gion 1Agr 'ees, to Purchalse Land for Sewage Treatment Durharn Region has agreed to purchase 12.8 acres of land from the Town of Newcastle at a cost of $102,000 for the construction of the Soper Creek Sewage Treatment Plant, it was announced Mondav. Mayor Garnet Rickard saîd an agreernent has been signed between the town and the region for the purchase of the land. The mayor stated the engineering drawings for the plant were still proceeding, but that now the site had been acquired, an environrnental assessrnent hearing could begin if necessary. 1It.was the rnayor's belief the Ministry of the Environrnent wasn't taking any chances with any of its projects and was subjecting everytbing to an environrnental review bearing. The deal was worked out witb the region and Ontario Hydro, which was also interested in acquiring land in the immediate vicinity of the site. The land is located at the License, Notices Upset One, Resident The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, July 26,1978 15 prior to the notice being delivered. So far, he knew of several cases where persons had forgotten they had bought a tag and paid the $17 fee. "We've found that rather than wait for the complaints about dogs to corne into the office, we thought it would be more appropriate to leave the notice," said Mr. Sirnpson. If you receive one and have already purchased a license, Mr. Sirnpson suggests that you let his department know. Suffer Burns Two Bowrnanvile children were recovering last week frorn acid burns to their arms and legs following an incident on a Waverley Gardens' sidewalk, Tuesday evening, July 18. Choose your best deal at: 219 King St. E. 623-4481 Road, received the burns when they rode their tricycles through what appeared to be a puddle* of water on the, sidewalk at Waverley and Lawrence Avenue. The pddle turned out to be an acid, 4believed to be'of the kind used for cleaning tin and other metals before they are soddered, and it sprayed up on the youngsters' arms and legs. According to police, a bottle containing' the acid was dropped or thrown onto the sidewalk by an unknown party. The puddle of acid wa.s flot particularly large and the broken glass was stili on the ground. Police have no good idea on how the acid got there, altouh teysuspect because of the area'sproximity to the construction sites:, it carne frorn there'. An investigation is There was at least one person in the Town of Newcastle annoyed at the rnunicipality's rnetbod of handing out notices for license fees last week. Margaret Nicks, of 16 Lover's Lane, received a notice inforrning ber she owed the town $17 for the registration of her dog. Mrs. Nicks, however, bad bought a license for the dog on January 30. The notice for the dog license contained no instruction to Mrs. Nicks telling her to disregard the notice if she already bad purcbased a tag, or even to cail the departrnent if she had any questions. It rnerely stated: "lTake notice that you are required to pay to the undersigned, Collector, the sum of $17, as Dog License Fee for the year 1978. And further take notice that unless the sarne be paid witbin 10 days frorn the date of this notice, surnrary proceed- ings will be taken to enforce payment. Larry Sirnpson, town by-law enforcement officer, said these notices were standard and were delivered to any household where the collectors believed a dog to be. According to Mr. Simpson, if the town collector saw a dog in your yard, heard one in your house, or was told you owned one by your- neighbor, you received the notice, regardless of whether or flot you had a tag. He said the resident's money would be returned if it was discovered that they had paid the fine and bought a tag FLOWERS *DRIED FRESH TROPICAL .GREEN PLANTS 3 STORES: S Highway No. 2 King St. E., .,Oshawa Simncoe St. N., VNRLEOshawa Fr REDW"'S "FR OUIT MARKE getcokil, T'eom, ~w (Jieu ýAJpge, Pmbk apd gweet Càehkteg. Tbey are the places where you can spend sorne leisure time in your garden, wbether tbis is at borne or at the cottage. Patios can be successfully placed at different locations, in the backyard or at tbe side of the bouse, and it is not uncommon in the southern states to have patios in the front yard screened by fences or bedges. Basic consideration should be given to the location with regards to weatber conditions,, wbere the prevailing winds corne frorn, wbere the neîghbours house is situated, wbere tbe patio will be in relation to the sun: for instance if you want to have the rnost sun in tbe evening or if you would like to bave the sun on tbe patio in tbe morning to eat your breakfast outside etc. and I have seen patios on the soutb side that you could not sit on, because tbe sun was s0 bot that you would literai- ly be baked by tbe sun. Sornetirnes a compromise between sun and sbade can be done by building the patio around a corner. Surface Texture. Considera- tion sbould be given .wbat type of materials you are going to use to built your patio, in texture and also in color of the building materials. You rnay want a very srnootb surface so that cbildren can play on the patio with their wagons or tricycles, or you rnay want a very rustic setting witb trees and sbrubs surrounding the patio. If you are tbe entertain- ing family tben provisions sbould be made for barbeque grills, tables to bold tbe fond and drink and tbe possibility of fond spilis sbould be kept in mind, and can -tbe outdoor furniture be easily moved, and is it sitting smoothly. Most patios today are made with the precast patio stones, in various shapes, patterns and a variety of color, but other materials are often overlooked, sucb as the paving bricks, cernent blocks, round patio stones, railway ties, or even round slabs of wood eut off telephone poles, fine pea gravel, or different patterns can be created by using 3 or 4 different materials such as pebbles imbedded into cernent, or large area's can be divided witb strips 'of wood and new pattern can be created. Today there area number of new interlocking stones on tbe rmarket in various colors that will make a beautiful patio. When building a patio make sure that the soul under the patio will drain away properly, or place some drainage tiles under tbe patio, and once you are satisfied with the drain- age, you can grade the site to theproper height. Most patio's will require a base of 5 to 8 inches of sand so that the surface will be smooth to lay the building material level, and will keep the weeds to a rninimumn, since weeds will not grow in sand. Some people will put plastic down to keep the weeds out, but I have not found this too satisfactory, since rnost of tbe weeds will grow in the soul that cornes in between the cracks after the patio has been down for a year, and weeds can be easily controlled by pouring a soul sterilant between the cracks. The only way to build a patio properly is to first have it al laid out on paper, preferably graph paper, so that the finished product can be seen on paper and changes can still be made. Consider a few open spaces in the pa 'tio for flower beds, or for a dwarf tree and especially around the perirneter of the patio provisions sbould be made for sorne type of flower beds that will be colorful. Try to built it yourself, it is a lot of fun. Until next week, happy gardening.
