f One Way to Beat the Heat Vicki Clark found one of the best ways to beat the heat last week at Bowmanville Pool. Miss Clark was participating in the pool's fun day, a day of games and fun for all who took part in the recreation department's swimming programs this summer. Games included swimming using only your legs, trying to dog paddle with a life jacket on, and baseball in the pool. Newspapers Help Strengthen Swimmer's Kick While newsDapers have long been known as the purveyors of local happenings, it was revealed Thursday they could also be used to strengthen a swimmer's kick. During Bowmanville Pool's fun day, lifeguards organized the swimmers into relay teams and had them swim lengths of the pool on their backs while reading a local iaer. Here. an unidentified swimmer shows excellent form as she reads the paper on the straightaway and then passes over the paper to her partner. While most of the participants did well, the papers were somewhat the worse for wear when the contest was over. Mrs. M. Wehrli, Biberstein, Switzerland, returned home Friday after spending six weeks with her daughter, Mrs. Clara Schmid and grandsons Gary and Glen. Last Wednesday Mr. Murray Martin took his father-in-law, Mr. James Murray to visit an old friend, Mr. Charles Barkey, Markham. His many friends will be pleased to know that retired us driver, Mr. Gordon Brown, Courtice, was transferred on Saturday from Princess Margaret Hospital to Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville. Sympathy is extended to friends and relatives of Mr. George Kimball, who passed away on Tuesday, July 25, 1978. The funeral, conducted by the staff of Morris Funeral Chapel, was held in the Newcastle United Church on Friday afternoon. The Rev. David Spivey officiated and a nephew of the deceased, Mr. Fred Graham, Halifax, N.S., was organist. The Church, full of attendants, was graced with many floral tributes along with Rev. David Spivey's eulogy, all attested to the good Christian life followed by George. A surprise dinner party was held last Wednesday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Pearce in honour of their son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Kim Pearce, Bethany, the occasion being their lth wedding anniversary. Family members present included daughter Viki and son Kirk, Bethany, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Walton, Brampton, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Pearce and boys and Mr. and Mrs. Rick Pearce and family, District 4 of the Ontario Horticultural Society held its first Flower Show at Cold Springs Community Hall on Saturday, July 29th. It was a great success, thanks to the efforts of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Tink. Attending from Newcastle were Mrs. Bertha Fisher, Mrs. Vicki Lesnick, George and Madeleine Buckley. The Newcastle Horticultural Society members brought home ten prizes. Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Joll of Glidden, Saskatchewan, returned home Monday after a two-week visit with his father, Mr. Everard Joll and other relatives. Sunday dinner guests with Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Powell were Mr. Harold Powell and Mr. Art Van Dolder, Toronto, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Hunt, Pontypool. Sunday evening visitors with the Powell's included Mr. Everard Joll, Mrs. Margaret Rudman, Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Joll and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Pearce. Mr. Lorne Johnson and Mrs. Myers are patients in Cobourg District General Hospital. Miss Candy Storks, Scar- borough, was home for the weekend. Mrs. Raye Friedlander, Toronto, and Mr. Dean Fried- lander, Kitchener, were Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Garrod Jr. and family. Mrs. Anne Parker, who was holidaying with Mrs. Pauline Storks, returned home to Nashville, Tennessee, last Wednesday. Misses Mina and Eleanor McMillan, Toronto, were Saturday guests of Mrs. Pauline Storks. Recent visitors with Rev. and Mrs. Allan Haldenby at the Rectory were their daughters and sons-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. M. Fadel, Toronto and Mr. and Mrs. Sandy Ross, Alton. On the weekend they also received a telephone call from daughter Charlotte in Tel Aviv. Mr. Ivor Brawley who is a patient in Oshawa General Hospital was most pleased to be home for the day on Sunday returning Sunday night to the hospital where his therapy continues. Mr. Walter Hagerman is a patient in Oshawa General Hospital. Mr. Herb Heard and Mr. and Mrs. Perc Clarke, Port Hope, were Friday evening visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Brown. Mr. and Mrs. Willard Lock- hart, Mesa, Arizona, Mrs. 3ette Casey, Chicago, Mrs. Elorence Thomas, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Buttery, Bowmanville Johnna and Delann Chard, Newcastle, were Thursday evening supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Lancaster. Mrs. Narda Hoogkamp and' youngest son Robert enjoyed a three week holiday early this summer in Holland. Mrs. Bessie Dean has returned from a July holiday spent with Mr. and Mrs., James Dean and Glen, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Mrs. Grace Couch has returned home from Oshawa General Hospital. The Blackstock Community is pleased to welcome Jean Mahaffy as the official Post Master of the Canadian Postal Service in Blackstock. Thank you to Howard Abbott of Blackstock for service to Blackstock for service to Blackstock as Post Master for the past seven, years. Howard served as Post Master at the Burketon Station Post Office for 5 years prior to Blackstock and also served 12 vears as a mail carrier for the rural area. He and his wife will now concentrate on ways to enjoy their 'golden' years of retirement life. Lawrence and Linda McLaughlin, Lynn and Brent returned on Tuesday from a 9-day vacation in Calgary, Alberta, where they enjoyed the closing days of the Calgary Stampede. Sorry to hear that Mrs. Courtney Graham is a patient at the Port Perry Hospital, hope of a speedy recovery is extended to her. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Graham returned on Sunday evening from a two week second honeymoon. Harvey went all the way to Alberta where he and Joan stopped off to see several points of interest: Banff, Jasper, Edmonton, Calgary and Lake Louise. Several friends, relatives and neighbours of Vera Mountjoy of Nestleton attended ber 90th birthday celebration on Friday, July 28 in her own home. The women of the Nestleton Presbyterian Church helped in the preparation of the well attended event. The new Anglican Experimental Church Service was introduced on Sunday. United Church News Worshippers met at Kirby on Sunday, July 30. Next Sunday, August 6, Services will resume at Newcastle United Church at 10:30 a:m. Helen Dorrell is down this week staying with her sisters, Eileen McLáughlin and Wilma Van Camp while preparations are made for the Auction sale on Saturday of contents of the farm of the late Wilbur Tom.. Larry and Beth Schryburt, Vicki, Joel and Arthur spent Thursday through Sunday in Ottawa at the home of Rita Schryburt. Gill Bull, president of the Blackstock Nursery School, chaired an Executive Meeting at the home of Vice President Chris Rollo, on Thursday evening. Secretary, Jackie Danter, suggested that in the future a day be set aside for Registration rather than total responsibility being placed on the Vice President. Kathy White reported that the wood has been bought to start the Playground. Brenda Walker and Joanne Lee were also present at the meeting. There will be a meeting for all mothers of Nursery School children on August 29th at the Recreational Centre Meeting Room at 8:00. It is a very important meeting and it is hoped there will be a good turn out.
