Win Here agnd in Petýerborough By Norman Smith La aur last report we bemoaned the failure of our local lawn bowlers ta win any prize in the Brock Tournament but they regained their form. with a vengeance last week. At Peterborough an July 22 Ross Hall and Brian Hughes, two young, bowlers with limited experience but lots of skill, won the Gea Coleman Trophy with a total score of 57 for three games. In the samne tournament Clarence Oke and Les Langs won the prize for second high two-game winner with a score of 47. The next day the samne redoubtable senior pair won the same prize in the tournament for the Harry Norton Trophy in Lindsay with the same score. How's that for consistency? Then came Wednesday, July 26, and the local tourna- ment for mixed pairs sponsored by the Carter F'amily who last year presented a new trophy ta replace one that was ready for honorable retirement after serving for over 20 years. I'here was another full complement of 16 teams and when the dew began ta fail and the masquitoes ta bite around 9:30 p.m. Dorathy Carter Oke had the pleasure of presenting the trophy and first prize ta ler husband Clarence aad his >artner, Mabel Mavin, with a total score of 59 plus 9. As President Harold Bennett nentioned ta the applause of the crowd, the Carter Family .lso provided the afternoon efreshments including generaus samples of the delicious cookies for which they are famous. Oke started the first game disastrously and was dowa 0-6 after two ends and 8-15 after 10 ends ta Gord and Grace King Df Cobourg. Then class or stamina (or something) began to show and in the last four cnds hie and his partner scored 15, 2 and 6 ta put the game àway at 25 (21 plus 4) ta 15. The other big winner in the 'rst game was Harold Garrett ýpartnered by wife Anne) of Xhitby who ran' roughshod )ver George Twiddy and 'aorathy Haley of Oshawa ta vin 21 plus 3 ta 8. This brought ke against Garrett in the ;cond gamé but this time arrett lost an even more iesided game - Oke won 21 us 5 ta 3 ta give him a th di af en of sfi en 4, av fir o. wi Ok Ga plu ..: . .... ' cumulaUtive score of 42 plus 9. In the meantime anothen local team, Bill Howell and his daughter, Gail DeVries, had scored two good wins: 18-10 over Pete and Olive Maxymuik of Oshawa and 19-11 over Hank and Cora Taylor of Cobourg. Howell's cumulative score of 37 brought hlm against Oke in the third game in which Oke again started slowly ta be down 1-4 after four ends. The game was won and last la the next two ends which Oke took with a 4 and a 5 ta give himn a lead of 10-4. Although Howell matched him point for point thereafter the final score of 17-11 gave Oke a decisive win - and the trophy. As frequently happeas in bowling tournaments, while the eventual winner is scoring big wins another team plads EOUtBA Playoffs Tyke A - Oshawa, Peterborough, B -Cobourg, C - Bowmanville, Whitby, Belleville, D - Ajax. This gave Nicholls a total score of 49 and second prize overaîl. Ia the battle for high two-game winaers, Hank and Cora Taylor of Cobourg had two good winning scores (19 and 21) ta put with their losing il for a total of 51 and first prîze in this category. There was a tie for second high two-game winner with a total of 48 each scored by Brock and Howell of Bowmanville but the prize was awarded to Brock on the basis of the lower total scored by opponents. The prize for high one-game winner was won by Norman and Evelyn Smith, also of Bowmanville, with a total score of 44 plus 1. And s0 ended another glorious day's bowling - a game which its devottes love sa much that one skip who failed ta win a single game was heard ta say he con- sidered, himself lucky ta be able ta participate!
