Two other competitors in the 750 cc competition were injured in the accident which occurred during a practice and qualifying session Saturday morning. Avrum Gudelsky, a 31-year- old motorcyclist from -Aldie Virginia, died at Mosport's track hospital after serlous ' injuries on the track. Gudelsky's machine crashed while its driver ,was attempting to avoid the body of defending world champion Steve Baker who had skidded and hit a wall while rounding corner two. Gudelsky is survived by his wife and two children. .Steve Baker was rushed to Oshawa General Hospital where he underwent surgery on bis right ankie and hand. Heis expected to remain in hospital for three weeks. Belgian racer Didier Derodragues was also taken to hospital in Oshawa suffering from a dislocated left hip. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined but it is believed it may have been caused by an oil spill. Baker is positive that he hît an oil spill as he was rounding corner two. The 26-year-old motor- cyclist had bis machine skid from underneath hlm, hittine the tire cushioned wall and bouncing back onto the track. Baker's legs were then run over by Conrad Urbanowski of Florida. Following Urbanowski was Richard Schlachter who also slid but was able to manoeuver around the sprawled body of Baker. At this time, the bikes of Gudelsky and Derodragues approached the corner and they too skidded and crashed. Gudelsky went down first and it is believed he may have been hit by Derodragues. The two drivers who managed to crawl through the incident, Urbanowski and Schlachter, both confirmed that they had slipped on what they thought was oil. Gudelsky's death was the first during competition since 1971 when Wayne Kelly was killed in a Formula Ford race. When competition continued Sunday, the world champion- ship in the 750 cc class was won by Johnny Cecotto who finished fourth overall at Mosport.
