News lias flot been written regularly for the past week or so for two reasons, the mail itself was a littie out of order and for the first haif of last week this reporter was in the Ottawa Valley. Some of the items mentioned here are a littie out of date but perhaps stili of interest. Sa rarely do we see a partridge that'we wondered if they had disappeared from the area. But a weeki or so ago Jane MeColl heard a crash of glass and went ta the porch to see the carpet littered with broken glass and a very much alive partridge walking about. She went to the door ta open it, then heard another crash and the partridge had taken off, fortunately through the same window. The next day one crashed into a store window on~ Walton Street, Port Hope cracking the window and snuffing out its own life. Her The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 1, 1978 15 WI..ESLEY VILLE story for the children was îllustrated by using road maps, especially those with routes marked on them for specific trips, and related them ta our road map for 111e as marked out in the scrip- tures, Her message for the morning was the joyous Christian life as shown by Paul, even when in damns in prison in contrast ta Seneca, a wealthy man, who could have all the material benefits available yet spoke despair- ingly of the purpose of life. The choir's anthem wias "Ten- derly Jesus is Calling", and organist was Mrs. Lorraine Beatty in the absence of Mrs. Reeve Clarence Nichols and John Connelly received the offering. We are glad ta know Mrs. Milton Brimacombe is conva- lescing at home in Osaca after a long period in Port Hope and Peterborough Hospitals. Friends here were sorry ta hear of the death of Mr. Tom Bennett of Port Hope a week ago. Mr, Bennett was well known here, a frequent visitor with his sister, Mrs. Reeve, and his cheerful greeting will be missed by many besides his family. 1Apple trees are stripped of their fruit in most orchards and there is a tantalizing smell from the bushels piled ready for deiivery. The Macs have been sold from most growers, tliey are not a long keeping apple. Ladies are busy once again, quilting at the home of Mrs. H. Darke. Sunday morning service at Welcome United Church on October 29th, was arranged by the UCW as were others on the .charge as Rev. Kennedy was away during the weekend for a study session. Mrs. L. Kellogg shared the service with Mrs. Doreen Wilson who is the regular student supply. Mrs. Wilson's story for the children was illustrated by one of lier own memories of a speaker dramatizing lis message of "God is Love" by bringing the invisible writing on a sheet of paper ta liglit by heating it. The junior choir's anthem was "Love is something, ifyou give it away". How is your prayer Life was the topic of the sermon and its searching question of personal prayer ife e, and the empliasis on the power of prayer, provided mudli food for thought and action. A bright golden chry- santhemum was a cheery note. THIS WEEK WE HA VE MORE CONSTRUCTION SPECIALS No WH AT?9 WHAT DO WE, DO WITH ALL THESE BEANS WE'VE GOT LEFT?
