The game started out on a chippy note with the officiais having little to say about it. The Bowmanville boys normally don't take a great nueber of penalties but they allowed the Lindsay club to daw them into il trips to the box while only six times where they assessed a minor pena ty. The final score was Lindsa 6, Bowmanville 1 with 3 of th Lindsay goals scored on th power-play. Bowmanville only goal scored by Tod Hooper assistby Steve Ogde and Doug Dilling. On October 23, Bowmanvill Toros met the Markhan Minor Midgets for the firs game of the season i Markham and came away o the short end of a 5 to 3 score. It was a case of Markham v Tim Almond who got a "ha trick", with two assists goini to Jon Janack and one to Da McMullen. The Toros seemed to lac] their usual speed with man' passes missing their mark Terry Bradey was kept very busy in the net. However, Shaughn Houston tied things for Bowmanville at 9:01 assisted by Tim Preston. This tie lasted until 7:02 of the 3rd period when Lindsay went, ahead for good. This was the winning goal for Lindsay and result6d in their 2-1victory. Lindsay took il penalties for 22 minutes. Bowmanville 10 for 20 minutes. Poor Third Period Costs Toros a Good Team Effort On what is becoming a Toro trademark now the Toros play excellent all-round hockey for 40 - 45 minutes each game. Unfortunately the game is 60 minutes, thus Bowmanville hasn't won a game yet. For some teams, a third period collapse can occur but they can still win because of the lead they can build up during the first two periods, but the problemn is Bowmanville never has a big lead, they are always involved in a close, usually tied game when they fall apart. It was the same old story Saturday at the Darling- ton Sports Centre. Bowmanville lead 2 - 0 after the first period on goal by Dan Coombes from Tim Preston, and Dan Richie from Glen German. But it was 4 - 4.after two. Ron Hopcoft fromn Glen "Gemaneand SaughnnHousto and tim Preston -from Troy Wood were the 2nToro scorers that period. Sloppy defensive play and a flat effort (despite being tied) allowed the coach to make a goaltending change to help shake up the team. Scott Bate faced 12 shots during his two periods. And replacement Billy McArthur 14 in the third. But the roof fell in for the Toros and Billy when, within a span of 36 seconds the visiting Ajax team scored three goals and went home with a 7 - 4 win over the still winless Bowmanville Club. Notes: The Toros were outshot 26 - 19. Penalties Bow. 6 - 12 minutes, Ajax 7 - 14 minutes. Their record now starts at 0 -7-1. lestUxhige will fit in nicely with the Eagles since Brad is a phayer who comes to play and has a high level of skills. In the assessment of teams it is said that a team must have strength down the centre and the Eagles with Jerry Johnson, Don Farrow and their new addition will defi- nitely have that strength. Eagle scorers in the first period were Gary Nemisz from Brad Godfrey and Ralph Cryderman. Second Period: Gerald Brunt from Kirk Kemp and Don Farrow; Jerry Leddy from Ralph Cryderman and Jerry Johnson; Kirk Kemp from Gerald Brunt and Jerry Johnson; Wayde Preston from Keith Holton. In the third period the scorers were Jerry Johnson from Keith Holton; Kirk Kemp from Ralph Cryderman and Tom Dwyer; Brad Godfrey from Kirk Kemp and Wayde Preston and, finally Jerry Johnson from Gerald Brunt and Don5 Farrow. The Eagles travel to Port Perry Thursday night and then come home Sunday night against the Stouffville Clippers. Every game is a big game for the Eagles who are in the battle for first place. Two upcoming games that can be placed in the high priority class are games in Port Hope Thursday, November 16 and' then a game with the high- flying Cobourg Cougars in Cougar country Monday, November 27 November 27. EagIes Ca e fro. Behind Defeat Lindsay uskies By Don Wilcox Bowmanville Port Darling-, ton Marina and Hotel Junior Cs played league game number nine in Lindsay Friday night and came home with a come-from-behind 5 - 3 decision in a hard-fought game with the Trent Muskies. The Eagles' defence, which has been hit by injuries, was really short-staffed for this encounter. Their ranks were reduced to Wayde Preston, Dan Strike andJohn Kane after starter Rick Scott left the game early. Tom Dwyer was out with an injury and Captain Brian Simpson was, unable to make the game because he was home studying very hard for an upcoming exam in his real estate course. Bob Koczulab had his best game by far in the Eagles' net, making excellent blocks, leav- ing few rebounds and cutting the angles well. The defence must be given full marks for its effort headed by Wayde Preston who handled the puck with poise along with John Kane, (a castoff of Port Perry) and the even, steady play of Dan Srike. Coach Bob Spooner has some versatile players on his robt r and one of thse is Gerald Brunt who attends York University and comes home to play weekend games. Gerald plays the left wing with authority, can win draws at a high level of efficiency and in this game was moved on occasion to defence, helping to relieve the overworked trio handling defensive duties. Another important area for the Eagle team is fan support. A large group of Eagle supporters got behind the team especially in the third period with their familiar chant of Go Eagles Go. The fans helped to get the team together when the going was really tough. Muskies are going to have a strong team in the second half of the schedule with new coach Oshawa Monume-nt Co. The new coach will stress tough, physical hockey including liberal portions of the old hickory. Eagles got the jump on the Muskies, taking advantage of the several lineup changes made by Lindsay for this game. Gary Nemisz who played a strong physical game - the only formula to win in Lindsay - started the scoring: uncovered in the slot set up by John Conboy. Ralph Cryder- man got his first on a draw won by John Conboy. Cryder- man set for a quick release short slapper. Watching Cryderman, a prolific scorer, one cannot help but think the last year's Eagle coaching staff missed in not signing him as he was available in early January. The lone second period goal came from Muskies' Bob Sinclair who had just returned to the lineup assisted by Scott Robertson and Dean McGregor up from their midget team. Lindsay tied the score early in the third period when Dave Mehan cashed in a corner pass-out fromý, John Lucas. The Play was siaited by Guy Berkaboom who also is return- ing to the lineup after a tryout with the Peterborough Junior Bs. The Muskies' go-ahead goal came from the midget team player Dean McGregor assist- ed by Scott Robertson. The Eagles tied the game using five forwards on the power- play. The draw was won by Don Farrow who passed back to Jerry Johnson on the left point. Johnson passed to Jerry Leddy on the right point who scored on a change of direc- Bure EdCaio e tion slap shot. The Eagles' game winner came from the ever-alert Ralph Cryderman assisted by Gary Fleming and Don Farrow after Lindsay had let up due to a whistle being blown in the crowd. Wayde Preston's insurance goal was assisted by Jerry Leddy and Jerry Johnson with the blooper shot beating Paul Wiltshire who had played a strong game in the Muskies' net. In the lineup for his final game with the Eagles was left winger Keith Holton who played last season with the Port Perry Juniors. Markham scored the only goal in the second period. In the third period the defense on both teams tighten- ed up and there were very few opportunities to score but the Toros came through late in the game with Brian Noble tying the game with a goal and assists going to Chris Beck. and Michael Houston. The Toros did not show their potential until the third period being content to watch the other team. In the third period they came out and outshot the opposition 9-5, scoring their only goal. Larry Perris scored with Kelly Armstrong and Shawn Rekker gaining the assist. In this game the forwards Larry Perris, Mike Gallant and Cory Sweet played a strong game especially in the third period. On Nov. 4th, the Toros again played the Oshawa AAA coming up with a5-1 loss. We really have improved since the last time we played this team holding our own through most of the game.
