12 The Ca nadian Statesman, Letter t o Editor October 31, 1978 Dear Editor: In a recent edition of your paper a letter was published from Dean J. Kelly of Port Perry. 1 will flot attempt to deal witb the inaccuracies in regard to the allegations of, Dr. Ernest J. Sternglass and the alleged "frightening link between cancer and atomic 'Plants". Dr. Sternglass has been making allegations in regard to the effects of low levels of radiation for years - first from fallout and then from nulear plants. His allegations were thoroughly discredited by tbe United States National Academy of Sciences in a report whicb said of his early work: "It is clear that the correla- tions presented in support of the hypothesis depend on arbitrary -selection of data' supporting the hypothesîs and the ignoring of those that do not." Wbat that means is that Sternglass picked the data that supported his theory. It's a bit like a man who says that women are taller, than men and goes on to prove it b y xeasuring only selected tall women and short men. He is repeating the saine process around the Milîstone nuclear plant in New England. He bas chosen years before the plant started up when the incidence. of cancer was low and years after the plant started when the incidence of cancer was bigb. If different years had been chosen it could be proved tbat living near a nuclear plant reduced cancer deatbs. Neither, process is acceptable. Dr. Rosalie Berteil bas neyer carried out a study of nuclear power plants and the surrounding populations, so lier allegations are unsupport- ed. If a person is desirous of obtaining good information on radiation risk, hie or sbe should read the reports of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (The BEIR report) and of tbe United Nations Scientific Committee on the effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR 1977) and it will be quickly realized that the risk at the boundary of a nulear plant to an individual wbo resides tbere a wbole year is negligible - equivalent to the risk fromi the extra radiation dose received in a transatlantic jet return fligbt due to cosmic radiation or from visiting Banff for a few weeks. Dr. Jack Cunningharn of the Prlncess Margaret Hospital recently appeared before a select committee of the Pro- vincial Parliament and indi- cated that this risk was equivalent to smoking one cigarette a year. Tbe advantages of nuclear power for Ontario over other available productions metbods are very real; the cost is very mucb lower tban coal-fired plant costs; most of tbe money for- the power is spent in Ontario wbereas for coal-fired plants tbe major cost is for U.S. coal and, as a recent report by tbe Atomic Energy Control Board showed, it is safer tban most other metbods of electricity production. Yours truly, R. Wilson, Director, Healtb and Safety Division Ontario Hydro, Central Region. EDWARD HUBBELL A former employee a witb interment in Mount Lawn Cemetery. Rev. Jack Irwin officiated.
