Briai 17-5 Gm By Don Wjý,lcox Bowmanville Port Darling- ton Marina and Hotel Junior Cs played the Litti e Britain Merchants'recently in the new Little Britain Community Centre with the Eagles out- scoring the home team by a 7 - 5 count. The Eagles had two new players in the lineup. They were Jerry Leddy who came Up through the local ranks from novice to juvenile start- ing this season with Richmond Hill and Stu Roberts who cornes from the Oshawa Junior Bs where he played last season and started this season. Jerry is the kind of player who knows where the opposi- tion's net is and if you knock hlm down he just pops up for more. Goaltender Stu Roberts had the good fortune of piaying OMHA championship teams during hîs minor years. The Eagles also had Brian Dennis and Paul Bernard in the lineup from the juvenile ranks and both players turned in a good effort. The Eagles were short staffed due to injuries and absentees. Defenceman Tom Dwyer came off the injupy list to play his first league game and Tom showed littie effects of being oui of action, checking and moving the puck well. The Eagles' p assing game was lacking its usual efficiency in this encounter with most players eiecting to over- stickhandle, not passing the puck to the open man. Little Britain opened the scoring when Jamie Casey's point drive beat Stu Roberts. Casey was assisted by Bob Walden and Tim Pearson. Jerry Johnson tied the count on a low siapper. The Merchants went ahead on a powerplay by Terry Jewell assisted by Dale Jewell. Jerry Leddy tied the score before the end of the first period, set up perfectly by Jerry Johnsonl. In the second period the E agies went, ahead on a go-ahead goal by Dan Strike, after Wayde Preston carried the puck around, the -net, passing to Strike in the siot. Gerald Brunt started the play in a powerplay effort. John Kane fired a low point drive beating Bill Callaghan in the Little Britain net from a draw won by Gerald Brunt. The Eagles let up at this point and the Merchants took advantage when Kevin Jenkins, Up fromn the Little Britain Midgets for this game, scored unassisted. Then Brian Walden scored fromn Greg Starr to narrow the Eagles lead to one goal late in the second period. The Eagles' powerplay clicked early in the third period with Dan Strike's point drive finding the mark. Strike was assisted by Brian Simpson and Don Farrow. Elroy Jewell of the Merchants eut the Eagles' lead assisted by Ray Hill and Terry Jewell. The Eagles' final goal by Jerry Leddy fromn an on-the- money pass by Ralph Cryderman gave Leddy a three-point night and a good start with the Eagles. The Eagles were assessed only two minor penalties. Crities who sometimes tag the teamn as being the villains of the league will have to change their thinking if the Eagles continue along this line.
