Rev. Basil Long records a mesSage for DiaI-a-Thought, a service offered by the Orono United Churcn. By Maureen Corkery Everyone has times when they feel depressed, troubled or spiritually uninspired. Jn the Orono area, people suffer- ing through such periods i their life can caîl 983-9151 and receive a few needed words lof comfort and support. i This number connects yo'u with Dial-a-Thought, an out- reach of the Orono United Church. The service has, been in operation for eight years and pastor, Basil Long, says it is used frequently by people of al ages. 10 Cails Daily When Dial-a-Thought was first started, Rev. Long recalîs, he had a lot of curiosity cails. These types of calîs have since levelled off and Rev. Long says now he, has a minimum of 10 serious calîs a day and usually many more. The phone for Dîal-a- Thought, located in Rev. Long's office, is connected to a special recording machine distributed by the telephone company. When someone calîs, the number for Dial-a- Thought, the recording machine automatically answers and a two-minute message, pre-recorded by Rev. Long is played. The machine acts as an answering service for Rev. Long as well. Once the tape has ended, callers are given the opportun- ity to leave any messages they might have for him. The two minute tape con- sists of a message, thought, or prayer and often a combina- tion of all three. The topics are relevant to everyday life. Some recent ones dealt with forgiveness, the importance of _praise and pessimismn. Rev. Long says he finds the verses he uses for Dial-a- Thought "anywhere I can." He may use poems by such people as Patience Strong or Helen Steiner Rice or he may see an article in a magazine or newspaper that "says some- thing really meaningful about life" and adapt it. Messages Changed The tape used to be changed every day but Rev. Long's heavy duties interferred with this practice. However, hie found that when hie doesn't change it frequently, the use of Dial-a-Thought decreases. So, Rev. Long says hie is getting back into the habit of changing the tape every day or at least every other day. Over the years, Rev. Long has learned people have a variety of reasons for calling Dial-a-Thought. Some phone for inspiration, to calm them- selves down or for a quiet moment in the ratrace of everyday life. Others cal to gain the strength to do an unpleasant task, for extra devotional experience or simply to hear the thought or message. The number for Dial-a- Thought is advertised in the Orono Weekly Times and is passed on by word-of-mouth. Trhe service-, which is non- profit, is paid for by the United Church. Rev. Long justifies such a venture by saying, "the Church exists to live for others, not just itself."
